- swissgirl_7Gilly, Switzerland229 contributionsMust see when in HueWe booked a tour with a Bee Bee Travel and had a guide and driver to visit 4 major tombs. It was well worth it, as the tombs are located outside of the city and without a guide you end up looking at a lot of ancient buildings with little frame of reference. We started with Thieu Tri, went to Minh Mang, Khai Dinh and ended with Tu Duc. I think this was a perfect way to see the tours as they were all very varied and the progression was well done. Thieu Tri is still unrestored and parts of it are only ruins so its good to start there and work oneself up.Visited February 2020Written 17 February 2020

It all looks a bit grey to start with, but as you climb and look inside you will see some really amazing colours. As I have said in my other reviews, you really do need a guide, or you will see lots but know nothing.Visited March 2020Written 30 September 2020
- Customer909Lanark, United Kingdom192 contributionsA must see placeIn Hue, we booked a taxi for all day and visited all the tombs. I recommend this approach as how much time you need in each place is entirely up to you and are not hasted or rushed by the larger tours. Lovely place and views when a bit more quieter.Visited November 2019Written 11 January 2020

The tombs aren’t worth your money or time, just don’t bother.
Stick to the Citadel (Imperial City) cut your Hue trip to one full day, one night if you can make it work.
Recommend add or extend Da Nang to your plan and use it to visit Marble Mountain, Hoi An and explore the restaurants, bars, live music venues, beach and nightlife in Da Nang instead.
You’ll learn far more about Vietnam and meet better honest Vietnamese people.
Hue is full of cons and crooks trying to exploit one another and cash in on some crap historical assets.
If you insist on Hue visit the Buddhist temples, also where the famous Thich Naht Hanh (famous Buddhist monk who spent majority of his time in the West) departed this world. Also recommend go see the Cathedral. It won’t cost you a thing, but will experience more culture and interesting architecture.

Be prepared to climb if you want to get to the top where the tomb is. I counted the steps and if I didn't miscalculate...there were a total of 127 over three sets of stairs. Plenty to see between flights of stairs so time for resting! Very opulent tomb!

The 19th and 20th century imperial tombs near Hue were for the succession of puppet kings and emperors the French installed in those years of their "protectorate." Not France's proudest moment. Some are interesting, but none are interestingly old, not to mention ancient, nor of significant people.

This palace stands above many others due to the incredible mosaics and other finishings, as well as a really interesting story associated with the king.

The Tombs along the River Perfume are quite a sight along the Perfume River. The emporers of many dynasties are found here.

If you are visiting Hue, then this is a must see! Read it up on the history of this emperor and dynasty beforehand though.. then you will appreciate more on the architecture and decoration inside the tomb.

Taken here in private car with guide, quite a drive out of the city. Quite a few steps, coming down one has to be careful as there are no railings. Amazing the preplanning and construction of this tomb.

Can you buy a multi ticket for the 3 tombs?
Bella C
Cape Town Central, South Africa479 contributions
Yes, you can. We organised a 2 day tour with a private tour guide who was excellent - Ho Van Tam (otherwise known as Captain Tam as he has a dragon boat!) I am not allowed to give you his email address on this site. He got us a ticket for VND 360,000 to visit 4 tombs. We also went to the Royal Palace with him and did a trip on his dragon boat to visit some of the tombs on the Perfume River.
If you don't want to use him, I am sure that you can buy the multiple entry ticket easily when you are in Hue.

Can you please let me know which tombs would involve the least amount of walking?

They all involve quite a bit of walking & steps! I thought that Khai Dinh Tomb was the most spectacular but there were some steep steps at the entrance. After that there was little walking involved.

I think of going to Tu Duc Tomb by bicycle. Is it accessible by land or I have to take a boat?

Hello,
Tu Duc’s tomb is 6kms from Hue and easily accessed by bicycle. It's very nice.

Hi all,
How long would you say a visit to Hue would take? Both the citadel and the tombs.
I would be arriving to Hue from Hoi An probably around 10 am. Would it be ok to visit during the day, maybe 4-5 hours, and then go (I would be heading to Phong Nha/ Son Trach) or is this just too short to see it ok?
Any advice would be welcome, thanks!

How long to spend in Hue? It depends on who you are and what you want to see. Many visitors spend only one day in Hue. For me, this is not enough. We had five days in Hue and we managed to see many places, but there were still some places we did not get to see.
The tour manager of our hotel told us you can see the imperial citadel in 1 or 2 hours. We spent almost the whole day there.
We had half a day in a taxi to visit 3 tombs.
We had half a day in a taxi to visit 2 tombs and a pagoda.
We sailed on the Perfume River from the city to a famous pagoda.
We walked to visit An Dinh Palace (perhaps the distance is a bit far for walking). I recommend taking a taxi to the place and then you can walk back to your hotel.
Good luck!

Which are the big four tombs along the Perfume River you (Adam W) mention in your Hue review? Thanks

We were at King Khai Dinh's tomb which was spectacularly decorated in the area where the king was buried. Impressive place. We also saw Khai Dinh's tomb which is much more serene, more of a beautiful park with an understated resting place for the park. You might spend an hour at the first tomb and perhaps 40 minutes at the later tomb. Have fun.
