A rare breed of turtle enjoys this popular lake almost as much as countless locals and tourists. Hoan Kiem Lake is a dynamic daily tableau, from morning walks amid locals doing exercises on the shore, to young couples water-gazing on park benches, to the multiple shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in the vicinity. Centrally located in the city, Hoan Kiem Lake serves as a massive home base, and provides endless people-watching and recreational opportunities on the edge of the Old Quarter.

what a blast to walk around and people watch. Ladies doing tai chi, lovers, friends, giggling schoolgirls, families. Christmas Eve eve night they closed the streets surrounding the lake and there were musicians, balloon sellers, other market goods. Lots of folks in Christmas hats and antlers. Christmas Eve is overwhelmingly crowded packed so you can hardly move (watch for pickpockets!!)... More

We visited Lake Kiem on a Friday night ... and was a street party in action - circles of young people playing Shuttlecock, singers, people selling icecreams and other food. It was a riot of colour and noise and we had a great time. Don't know if this is the case every Friday night ... but it made our time... More

I like the atmosphere there. A night weekend market that u can see how lovely vietnamese are. People play in a group all over the street.Children are also had there own playground where they can drive a toy car and enjoy the family time.

This is a wonderful spot for a stroll and to escape the crazy city traffic. There are gorgeous gardens in the surrounding park as well.

You see or hear few birds in Vietnam, but sitting by the lake it was a joy to see Kingfishers. The lake makes for an attractive walk and escape from the noise and hustle.

The lake is the place where the elderly locals meet to practice all kinds of physical activities: gym, dancing, ti chi, etc... nice to see in the morning. At night the lake is alive with lights and decorations. The northern end of the lake is surrounded by many good restaurants with terraces overlooking the lake. Excellent place to relax after... Nothing much to do there but it does give you a good view and comfortable feeling.. You can enter to the temple area with a minimal entrance fee. in there you can read the history of the lake and the giant turtle that lived there.

We done a walking tour with Vietnam Backpacker Hostels. Included was a stop at the lake. Our tour guide told us there is actually a turtle living in the lake (legend).

The lake is great to take a walk around both day and night. Definitely attend on a Friday night, Saturday or Sunday as all the roads close down and it turns into somewhat of a carnival atmosphere. It's fantastic fun. The temple with the red bridge is also worth walking through for some history and beautiful ancient artifacts
