A key stop for tourists, most folks stay here when visiting Kathmandu. Bustling, fragrant and beautiful. There are lots of restaurants and cafes, and some fabulous hotels. Wear comfy shoes walking around and stay alert, it's very alive!

This part of town is where tourists shop. It is crowded, narrow, and confrontational as all shopping districts of this type seem to be. Having just been to India, the shopkeepers seemed a little less intense and more reserved. Furthermore, the quality of the merchandise was somewhat better. The shops were not all open air stalls but many had doors,... More

Yes, maybe once you have to go there. But there is no reason anymore to stay there for longer. The time changed, and Thamel is on the way... More

Thamil is an area with a lot of buzz in Kathmandu. It offers the best of cafes, shops, pubs with live music and much more. One has to bargain a lot.

A different world than most travel experiences will bring you. Probably not for the fainthearted and certainly not for the luxury traveler. Shop keepers are not as aggressive as in some parts of the world with the exception of the art school guys who seemed to follow me wherever I went. Lots of great places to eat and shop.
