If you know the history you will understand the wave of emotions I felt while walking around. Once you set foot through the doors you become overwhelmed with emotions. Walking around you see the various rooms which housed millions of infant, men and women slaves....More

I visited the Slave House on Gorée Island with a private guide. The brief 20 min ferry ride offered great views of the city. Upon arrival on the island you realize it is now a quiet, tranquil village and local art colony. This is in...More

La Maison des Esclaves is a sad but necessary reminder of the evils of the slave trade. The information displays are very informative but exclusively in French. Along with Goree Island as a whole this is the only must see spot in Dakar in my...More

A tragically sad a desolate place given that it was used to pillage Africa of it`s greatest resource; it`s People. We must forever remember what took place here ! I was pleased to see groups of school children with eyes wide open being taken around...More

Having been to other slave forts in Wesr Africa, I was unprepared for the tiny size of this place. The international media attention is larger than the place itself.

La Maison des Esclaves was a must stop. Americans and Europeans should understand the history behind the slave trade beyond the books. When you are there you learn more and get to see the actual rooms people were crammed in. There is an orale guide...More

Nice ferry trip tothis picturesque island, we had pre-arranged guide in advance. The guide only spoke French, may be difficult to find English-speaking guides. Interesting and dark history which contrasted with the peaceful life of today's inhabitants. Nice place to stroll around. We made a...More

I got to the dock at 9AM and got to the island before 1000. I was the first to the Maison des Esclaves. I got a private guide and was done before the crowd. I had to bring my passport. They did not accept drivers license.
