It is possible to hike and put your tent anywhere you like. The spots for tents are limited, so is better to have a map to search the flat areas... All the cirque is amasing and worth seeing. You can bivoack near the small villages (illets), between the trees at 3 roches, in the forets des tamarins, on the kerval... More

We visited all 3 cirques: cilaos, mafate, salazie. Mafate is the easiest to get to. Good view point. Many picnic and camping spots on your way up to the cirque. We didn't hike there. Remember picnic basket! Cilaos is a hectic drive! The road is narrow and very winding. We drank motion sickness tablets. On the way down my husband... More

Perfect place to hike - challenging terrain with breathtaking scenery as the reward. Best to stay overnight at a "gite" to properly experience the place. The hiking is tough (steep) but well maintained paths, through diverse terrain and foliage. (Hiked along Scout Trail and stayed at Ilet a Bourses for 1 night)

The trip up to Mafate is well worth the drive up which takes about 30 minutes from the coast road. Most important is to go early as the cloud covers it by 11-12am. Best to be there by 10-1030am. You climb from the coast to reach about 7500 feet on the rim of the cirque. You then look over the... More

A piece of nature you don't find somewhere else!! All the walking is so relaxing, a bit tuff sometimes, but so rewarded when you end your day at the Gites!! Just do it!!

Starting at sea level, the access to the Cirque de Mafate is a long and very winding climb. ...even on a coach. They really should use smaller ones, but our driver was astonishingly good. Views throughout are splendid...probably best to sit on the right side of the coach if you can. Even more amazingly, en-route we saw cyclists with bulging... More

I walked across the whole island, a little bit more than 175kms and I obviously spent a few days in Mafate. It is incredible! The mountains peaking up in the sky, the small villages of the cirque, the single tracks leading in and out of places. You will have the hike of your life. Definitely worth a trip.

This is one amazing view of this very beautiful Island. The beauty of this island definitely is in the inland unlike many islands being popular for their coastlines. Something worth seeing, pack a warm top as it is much colder up there than when coming from the lower part of the island

We did the two days trek to Marla with the overnight sleep in the village. It was definitely one of my most beautiful trek in my life. Fully recommending.
