Assaraya Alhamra

Assaraya Alhamra (the Red Castle)
Established in 1919 during Italian colonization, a breath taking monument in the heart of Tripoli, with artifacts, displays and more . honestly I'm more interested in the building itself. the architecture, the history, the stories , the people who lived there ... that sort of thing .
its not always open to public, nor all parts are accessible .
its a well preserved, essential part of the old Tripoli

The castle is not so great in itself. It houses a museum. When I visited it in 2005 it had a large cut-out portrait of Caddafi in the main hall. Apart from it, it was just ok.

If you like history, I would suggest you visit this place. Unfortunately, it has been closed due to security issues. I hope it opens soon for the public.

Look inside and than look outside. Pure History.

Roman villa remains, early christian chapels, army base, former prison, crusade remains and much more can be observed, visited and found in the prominently positioned castle. You understand it has been an important place over more than a thousand years when you are inside, but especially when you experience the amazing views over the town, the country and the the far away see. It the Acropolis of Tripoli.

I only visited it from the outside, it is very beautiful, and the explanations of the guide very curious. It is a must.
