Typical African market. Highly recommended to have a trusted local Ethiopian guide with you. Unless you are familiar with bargaining you should let your guide ask for the prices, you might end up paying 5 or even 10 times the actual price. Keep your valuables safe & stay cautious all the time. Never take out large amount of money when... More

We had read about the issues with Merkato and came prepared. But what we experienced was worse than we've ever expected. After arriving it took only about ten minutes for two pickpocket attempts to happen to us. First two boys approached us, one tried to distract my boyfriend while the other covered my handbag with a piece of clothing to... More

Merkato is one of the great places for a unique experience of Addis Ababa. If you have a friend who knows it well, the Spice Market, the Enset (a False Banana tree whose root and stalk is used to make porridge and bread) Market, Second hand items market, and the hand woven basket market sections are the best part of... In a huge mass of city blocks, you can get anything you can imagine and many that you cannot! Our guide mentioned how Africans are the true recyclers, because there is not a scrap pf plastic, metal or other material that us not recuperated and transformed into something else! Hectic with some crazy traffic, it's worth a visit, but best... More

The biggest market in Africa. Walking around here was one of the most amazing experiences of my life: seeing, smelling, and tasting many things for the first time. I strongly recommend getting a professional local tour guide as it is impossible to navigate if you are not a local. You will get lost, and never get to see half of... More

It is huge and hectic place. My guide warned me not to go in alone. If I did I am not sure I would know to get out. There is absolutely anything you may need from food, spices, tolls, pipes etc. etc. Some may find smell a bit offensive and its extremely crowded, however even though I did not buy... More

Ever went to a market to buy a certain item and you end up not finding it? Well, Merkato is the perfect place to go, cause there is literally everything there. In fact, it's such a large market that you will DEFINITELY end up lost in the middle of the huge, open air market and all the commotion going around... More

There is no market in entire Africa like Merkato - out of this word in size, display, movement, colors, odors and sounds. Loved every minute of it.

This is a massive market, easy to get lost, not many foreigners, and difficult to find your way around to the section or items you want, which are always in the same area (spice area, clothes area, coffee area, etc). I took a taxi from the Raddison Blu and just paid per hour and my driver took me around the... More
