This is a little known and little visited Tanzanian national park. It is remote but definitely worth the trouble to get there. Many animals in their natural habitat in a park guarded against poachers. Traversed in a vehicle, many animals can be viewed very closely. One usually does not encounter other vehicles, giving the experience a private feeling. Be sure... More

I have visited Africa many times over the years but my recent visit along with my wife found Katavi to be up their with the best. Its relative isolation has to a great extent protected it from the vagaries of to many tourists which do tend from a personal perspective to spoil the overall environment. We found Nick Greaves the... More

Great game viewing. Good roads. The only downside was the Park Service arranged an English speaking guide for us who spoke very little English and WE identified more birds and animals than he did! Someone there told us Rangers, which he was, often don't have guide training. We could have easily driven ourselves on this venture. A nice guy but... More

This tented safari camp/lodge offers morning and afternoon game drives with a trained ranger, as well as fabulous food and a very helpful staff with excellent service. Very remote, primarily solar-powered. Had opportunity to see 3 families of elephants, a sea of hippos, numerous crocodiles, huge herd of Cape buffalo, several herds of impala, warthogs, fish eagles, guinea fowl, etc.,... More

This is a truly amazing park with minimal visitors and maximum wildlife experiences to be had. If you would like to see more than a hundred hippos gathered in one spot, then this is the place to go! There are also beautiful herds of giraffes, elephants, zebras, impala, yellow monkeys and lots of birds to see. The park is in... More

Got in for free tough hitch. Lots and lots of animals. Hippos so thick in water was like a parking lot. Not much around so I suggest you bring provisions. Very cool and no tourists.

My wife and I were backpacking all over Tanzania. We traveled to Zanzibar, and we took several buses from Dar Es Salaam, all the way to Kigoma, then south to Sitalike and ended up at Katavi National Park. We tried sending the park warden an e-mail asking about the availability of park bandas but we never got a response and... More

We have visited Katavi NP with childeren and grandchilderen, lodging in bandas. We came by (hard) road from Bujumbura. 4h until Kigoma, 8 h from Kigoma to Katavi. A very exceptional experience, seeing lots of giraffes, zebras, elephants, topis, hippo's, lions etc. Our quote is 'very good' while there is no catering for the bandas. The common kitchen is very... My husband and I spent a week in Katavi and loved it. It was our third safari, but the first time that we visited Katavi. The animal viewing is superb. We saw a pride of lions killing a Buffalo, an older male lion chasing a younger male lion from the pride, a fantastic leopard, a lion cub eating a zebra... More
