The context of world travel is important to the "average" rating, since Algiers has not yet developed the type of venues generally found attractive by tourists. This freedom from colonial rule "martyrs" memorial is unique in this city as a modern design and structure, since most other sites of interest were founded during historic colonial rule, such as the Botanical... The memorial is important to Algerians, however, the huge collection of communication antennas on the central tower were extremely distracting and disturbing. Why build a memorial to those who suffered so much and then put ugly communication devices on the memorial to trivialize and demean the suffering? Otherwise, the memorial would have been a good experience.

Dedicated to the heroes of Algeria's 1954-1962 War of Independence, this 302-foot-high takes the shape of three giant, stylized palm leaves sheltering the eternal flame at the base. It is located in Algiers' heights and offers commanding views of the Bay of Algiers. I have visited a lot of great sites during my tour of 128 countries, and this is... More

Memorial du Martyr is among places that is worth visiting in Algiers. You can enjoy the view of the city from the hill top while learnig the rich history of Algeria. There is a museum which unfortunately I did not have a chance to visit. The place also have a number of shops, restaurants and cafes.

One of the few modern sites in this ancient city - well worth a visit. At the top of a hill with great views - lots of locals visit as a patriotic monument. There is a museum here but we did not visit

Certainly an impressive structure and very nice harbor views. Museum and a popular visit for natives, makes this a worthwhile stop.

Beneath the tall monument to the Martyrs of Algeria is the subterranean museum of the Martyrs. Here one will find the history of Algiers outlined and illustrated. There is a good selection of artifacts and tableau showing the type of activity that took place including torture - so beware!

Even if you are not aware of the history of Algeria, once you visit the Memorial du Martyr just to see it for itself, you will find the great museum immediately below the huge monument where you become well aware of the history of Algeria, provided you read French / Arabic. The view from the place is excellent and you... More
