When Thomas and Sarah Gaff hired architect, Isaiah Rogers, he found the perfect hillside in Aurora, Indiana to create a grand Italianate home overlooking the Ohio River. The house, built between 1853 and 1855, utilized master craftsman to create beautiful plaster ceiling moldings and medallions, carved woodwork, parquet flooring and artistic trompe l'oeil walls...all beautifully restored. Knowledgeable Docents take you... More

I first visited this Historic Landmark in 1969 and have visited it many times since. The ladies who show you through the house are very knowledgeable. If you love Historic and Victorian homes.. this one is a must see. Christmas is Fantastic and beautifully decorated. I will return.

This is a wonderful Victorian mansion with great views of the Ohio River. The docent gave an excellent and very informative tour. There is some parking just on the side of the house, and more on the street. The mansion is magnificently restored with some original and period pieces. The price is only $7.50 and you should bring cash.

Hillforest is a "victorian house museum" and sits up on a hillside in the small town of Aurora Indiana. We visited in the summer so the trees were full and we could barely see it until we were almost upon it, giving it a little suspense element. The house is beautiful inside and out. Originally our tour guide was a... More

I loved the tour of Hillforest House, built in the mid 1800's and after changing hands many times after the death of the original owners it has been lovingly restored to its former glory. Sitting high up on a bluff with fabulous views of the Ohio River, the tour guides walk you through the history of the Thomas Gaff family... More

I was on a solo motorcycle trip up the Ohio and came across this home. I was happy they were open at the time of my visit. It is a very worthwhile stop. The ladies that gave the tour were very knowledgeable about the house and the people that build this home and gave the home some life.

Wow!! What a charming family and so much history. Our docent (tour guide) was phenomenal. She knew so much and shared so readily. What a beautiful view of Aurora from the mansion. I think I could live there.

Went several years ago for a staff Christmas party. Food was great, atmosphere fun and educational tour to follow. Fun outing!

The staff requests no photos in the house or on the tour. I snapped this one of our tea lunch before that announcement. Lovely house beautifully decorated at Christmas. When we were there, another group had the other front parlor. The hostess tried to give the informational talk at the beginning of the tour by standing in the entry and... More
