The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Parking is crowded and there is a three dollar fee which is fine but you have to walk to the front and pay ( nearest machine wasn't working) stand in line and help people get their cards to work (says it takes AEx but doesn't) and then take your receipt back to your dashboard of your car. We tried to... More

What an amazing vantage point overlooking the Pali. the trades are blowing hard this time of year so be prepared for that. also the parking meter is out so free parking is nice.

Had been to this most windy place in Honolulu on this Thanks giving day. Strong chilly winds and lot of people, well disciplined all enjoying. Kids were almost flying in the wind. The mild showers added thrill.

We did not stay long at this attraction, because the wind was blowing about 40mph. Apparently, there is a natural wind tunnel formed given the location of the overlook. Elevation is around 1,200 feet, and it is a bit cooler, so take a jacket should you go. Parking is a nominal $3 charge - credit cards accepted. The drive up... More

This is a beautiful lookout point. If you cant hike to other lookout points, or hike Diamond Head, this is just as nice a view. You may have to wait for parking during busy times. and you will have to pay to park. It also becomes busier if you happen to be there when a tour bus arrives and its... More

Amazing views. Very windy though so pop on a jacket and tie your hair back and put your hats away!!! Car park is about 5 minutes walk away from the best views. You can take all the photos you need in about 10 minutes but you might want to spend some time looking at the wild chickens that are everywhere... More

We really enjoyed the views despite the intense wind! It was one of the first stops that we made and it definitely gives some perspective of the island.

"Pali" means cliff and "Nu'uanu" means cool heights and that is certainly appropriate here. It is 12,000 feet above sea level in the Ko'olau Mountains with a sweeping view of windward O'ahu. It is a short walk from the parking area but it might be a bit challenging if you can't walk well. You have to walk up an incline... More

My wife & I visited Nu'uanu Pali Lookout as part of a quick afternoon tour hosted by our friends who retired to Oahu several years ago. This is one of their family's favorite spots to visit on the Island. The views from the valley overlook are spectacular, even on a hazy day like we had. The most memorable condition was... More
