About
The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

The views are stunning and the history of the spot is historical. There is a large paved walkway so it is very whellchair excusable. There are no formal bathrooms but there are port-a-pottys. Very much worth the stop.

Yesterday, 3/15/24 4pm, were there with visitors and as you walk up the ramp to take in the incredible view the wind was filled with brown bees!! Last time here was 10/2022 and was the same then!! This time there were countless dead ones near the lookout points!! Since I'm very allergic I'll be sure to let friends know since I'll stay at the parking lot... really bummed!!! Can't they find the hive and move them??? They're dying up there!!

It is a beautiful lookout but it is also very windy, so you won't want to spend more than 5 to 10 minutes there.

You are supposed to pay $7 for parking but the machine wasn't working when we were there. I can understand paying for parking if you are hiking for the day but I think they should have some parks that are free for 15 minutes and separate paid parks, for those who need to park longer.

Even if you pay for parking the facilities are not good, just a couple of portaloos in the carpark.

Site of historical significance where the Battle of Nu'uanu was fought during which hundreds of warriors fell to their deaths off the cliffs and where King Kamehameha was able to unite the island of Oahu under his rule. There is a panoramic observation point here with scenic views of the windward coast of the island. However, the views would be more spectacular if not for all the development along this coast including the towns of Kaneohe and Kailua right below. There is also a $7 fee to park for non-locals. This is said to be a place known for car break-ins but there was a security officer present keeping an eye on the scene.

This lookout is a must do if you’re driving along the highway, heading to the north shore, or to Byodo-in Temple. The view is spectacular and it’s one of the best places to get close to the mountains without having to hike a long or challenging trail.

This is a very specism historical site and there are several other unique elements at this location including a sacred site and traces of the old road.

We visited twice and each time the weather was different. The first time was close to evening and it was a bit windy and cloudy. The second time was super sunny but the rain and clouds came in while we were there. If you go, understand that conditions can change quickly and vary greatly. It’s a good idea to hold on to your hats and anything that might fly away.

There is a parking fee of $7 (Sept 2023) but it was well worth it. Yes on the mainland states there aren’t very many places where you have to pay to see a lookout but as this site is so special and has a several other elements too we didn’t mind paying to help with the upkeep of the site.

Imagine the epic battle fought here by Kamehameha in his quest to unite the islands under his rule! It's a gorgeous drive up the mountain to the overlook and then breathtaking views! So glad we went.

Nu’uanu Pali lookout has sim absolutely stunning 180 degree views. It looks over the city and mountains. The Lookout was also not at all crowded when we went. The winds were insane as well. highly recommend it!

Even just driving to the lookout was worth it. Only drawback here is that you have to pay to park- really uncommon for a lookout and felt really unnecessary. There’s even a guard to enforce it. The view is amazing though!
