If you are an avid hiker out to get exercise, go fast, and get great vista views, then this is NOT for you. If you are out to see the land, walk in the footsteps of ancient Hawaiians, touch the same volcanic rock that the...More

This is a hike that is for the most part on lava rock in all sizes. Any step could be an ankle turner so you spend the entire time looking straight down. It is not a scenic hike as you continue to walk through lava...More

Nice hiking trails, not strenuous except keeping balance on some of the lava rock. Go slow driving to and from the trailhead, lots of blind spots, narrow and bumpy, potholes in the road, at least the last leg. Go early and take water, it gets...More

We found this hike in our guidebook and decided to check it out and we were glad we did! The drive out to la perouse bay was a bit sketchier than we expected and made us glad that we rented a beater. This hike leads...More

We only went out 1.5 miles, though the trail is at least 12 miles out. It was incredibly beautiful. Mostly over very sharp volcano rocks and very hot. We took a lot of water and I was glad to have hiking boots, though there were...More

The trail begins along the shore after the small parking lot then goes on under the shade of trees and suddenly turns into a sun drenched, rocky road into a lunar setting.... Very nice hike if done during a cloudy day but if the sun...More

We went to hike the only trail that wasn’t closed on the south side of Maui, where our time share was. The King’s Highway trail also known as Hoapili, the governor that helped reclaim some of it to allow hikers access. Leaving from La Perouse...More

This is a great alternative if you want to hike in a lava field without trekking all the way to Haleakala crater. The trailhead for the Kihei part starts in the LaPerouse Bay parking lot. You start out in a lava field then go along...More

I have led hikes along this route dozens of times and know it very well. This dry, barren area was once dotted with Hawaiian fishing villages, and has archaeological and cultural sites that can be hard to make out unless you know what you are...More

Despite of mass tourism, Maui offers some very easy (and free of charge) possitilities to walk or hike without guide. One of easiest possibilities is old Hoapili Trail or King's Trail. Old trail can be walked South (Kihei area) or East (Hana area). We walked...More
