About
At Honolua Bay, you can snorkel among coral reefs, sea turtles, and puffer fish in the summer and surf in the winter. You can also tour the rocky coast on a boat year-round. Park off the highway and head to the shore through a short trail along the forest. From the beach, you’ll spot the islands of Molokai and Lanai. If you choose to take a dip in the water, watch out for the slippery rocks below the surface. A few wild chickens roaming around complement the natural scenery. Try to get to the bay early to find a parking spot. – Tripadvisor

    Great snorkeling spot!
My family went snorkeling here. There is a beautiful walk through the jungle from the parking spots near the road down to the beach. We spotted lots of fish, including the trumpet fish and green sea turtles. One turtle swam with us over half an hour. 💜

    Great swimming
We parked on the road and walked in. About a 10 min walk to the beach. The walk alone is amazing under some huge old trees and feels like a real jungle. Once at the beach, there is only rocks. You must know you will not flop down a chair and chill out all day It's hard to walk in and out of the water. However, once in the water the snorkeling is great. This is a spot many tour boats go to snorkel as well so don't be alarmed when there are 2-3 boats anchored up in the water. TO see the good stuff you need to get out there. If you stay just 100 feet out you missed the views. Get out as far are you feel comfortable and enjoy. We saw so many different fish and turtles. In the water its amazing. The parking along the road is a mess. Need to arrive early to find a spot. You really only need to be here just enough time to snorkle but I don't see spending a day here. Too hard to walk around to do that. Just snorkel and move along.

Snorkeling (via short walk through dramatic forest).
We went to the bay for the snorkeling - and the snorkeling along the edges was good. One has to park by the road and then walk a short trail through a forest to the bay. There were signs where we parked advising us not to walk through private property and directing us to the trail head. One thing I didn't see noted in other reviews (or failed to notice at the time I was deciding whether to go to Honolua Bay) is that the forest walk is a strong feature itself; it's beautiful. The beach is made up of big rocks vs. sand - so not a beach if you're looking to sunbathe vs. snorkel.

Treacherous walk to the water in the rain
Muddy, treacherous walk if raining. Just remember that if it's raining you will get dirty, you will slip and you may fall. Good shoes are a must in rainy conditions as the walk through the forest (although beautiful) can be 15 dangerous minutes. Don't bring a chair..honestly if you are willing to try to balance a chair on the rocks..good for you. Personally, it took everything I had to get to the water in one piece with all my gear on the rainy day we were there. I even fell getting into the water and badly bruised my wrist because the rocks are so slippery and slimy. Once in the water, it's really beautiful and I saw two turtles and many, many fish. It was some of the best snorkeling on Maui but when I saw the catamaran tours I thought..."that would have been the safer way to go" but I'm sure those tours are costly. If you want to go on the cheap (looks like a cash donation is appreciated for crossing the land) this is the way to go, but bring only the essentials and enjoy. Also keep things hidden in your vehicle to be safe.

Worth The Effort To Get To The Water
We visited here twice as we enjoyed it so much the first time. Get here early (7:30-08:00) to park in the very small parking lot (with the portacabins) otherwise you’ll have to take a chance by the side of the road. Nice walk along the way through the woods, enjoying the company of wild chickens. The beach is very stony/rocky, but worth the trek once you make it into the water. Lovely and clear for snorkelling, enjoying a huge variety of fish and of course the odd turtle… Definitely make time if you’re nearby.

The bay itself is fine but not better than two steps in Big Island. The parking lot is horrible. It only has 5 to 6 parking spaces. It doesn't level up with the main road. The curb is much lower than the road. It damages my midsize Nissan front bumper when I come back up.

Didn’t snorkel or swim here- just admired the beauty. This place is amazing. Worth the drive just to look at for a bit. If you’re lucky enough to be here, you should check it out. Just amazing.

Old hawaiian guy claims to own this government park while smoking next to a no smoking sign. Likes to yell at little kids and police others on the beach. Massive areas of the park have been kinda roped off? He says there are so.e old graves. There are some very small parcels of private land but not where he was yelling at us from.

It's a bit of a walk down to see it, and it's a rock beach. It's still cool, and I'm glad we walked down.

This is a fantastic snorkel spot! But it’s a ROCKY beach. No sand so wear good shoes. And flippers walking out to the water. We saw 3 turtles! We felt the far left side was the best snorkeling or of your a strong swimmer wayyy out to the right. The jungle you walk through to get to the beach is AMAZING!! Video/photograph that whole walk. The sounds are amazing.
