Pretty, but not worth the crazy trek

This beach is beautiful, but the sand is not particularly green. It's brown with a slight olive tinge. That being said, it is a lovely location with a large sand hill which has pretty rock formations on either side of the beach. The waves and water are comparable to most beaches. If the path to get there was more reasonable,... More

If you are at all unsure about hiking definitely take the shuttle that is available. Keep in mind- the shuttle is extremely sketchy but about 20 minute ride. We walked in. It took us about an hour and a half. Luckily it was windy to keep the heat down as there is no shade. Being four months pregnant and told... More

We heard it was 45-60 minute hike in the hot sun with no shade. In the interest of time we splurged for the 'shuttle' which is a 20 minute drive and $15 per person, round trip. The shuttle turned out to be a majorly rusted out pickup truck. The drivers door didn't shut properly so they held it closed with... More

If you don't have a Jeep or something with 4-wheel drive, do NOT attempt to drive to the beach. Some of the locals run "shuttles" that will take you on the bumpiest ride of your life, but if you choose to walk, it's a long and dusty trek. Either way - it's totally worth it. The sand is an amazing... More

Had to go, made my wife go. Had to get the check mark. No regrets, however the beach was not all that green....high winds and a very long hike. Local People will drive you on 4 wheelers....not for rental cars....we walked there and rode back. It was a good story for years to come, but I can't imagine a repeat!... More

We drove a rental vehicle to the location we were directed by MapQuest. We followed the signs and ended up in a dirt lot with lots a people and vehicles. The owner of the property approached us and told us we could drive to the beach on the "improved " road for $20 or we could ride in the back... More

First of all I would like to say that trip advisor did not have any very descriptive reviews of this location. It is a very difficult off reading drive to the beach. 2.5 miles each way. It takes about 20 minutes to drive out. The roads are brutal with sharp lava rock sticking out, potholes and some steep inclines, so... More

Gorgeous area on the south side of the Big Island. If you are in decent shape, skip the truck ride from the locals and hike it...this is an easy hike of 5 miles roundtrip and allows you to explore the coastline, lava, and wild, rugged terrain of South Point...the most Southern point in the United States! The crater and beach... More

Quiet the hike in sand and dust. Very hot day , come prepared with lots of water and good hiking / walking shoes and cover up. There is no shade but great nice trade winds. The view is amazing. I gather it's the " locals" who will offer to drive you for $15 US but we walked. There is no... More
