Dedicated Banyan Trees
Mar 2020 • Family
This is a pretty tree lined street, but to me it was almost as interesting to marvel at who planted some of the trees! Famous honorees have plaques next to these gargantuan, seemingly dripping trees: FDR, Nixon, Amelia Earhart, Louis Armstrong and Babe Ruth to name a few I recognized. We only saw most from the car, but a walk through them would probably be nice and really highlight the size of the trees. The one tree we posed with could’ve fit a family of ten in front of it with no problem!

Great trees

Walking along banyan drive you csnt but be impressed by the vegetation. Some of the names of tree donors are impressive. The nearby sights are also great.

Boulevard under the banyans
Dec 2019 • Couples
This is probably not a place I would go out of my way to visit if I wasn’t staying in one of the hotels located on the peninsula, and I’m a tree aficionado, but the banyans flanking this boulevard are enormous. Many are 80-90 years old and they were planted by celebrities to commemorate visits. A walk amongst them in the evening is quite something just to hear all the tree frog voices making a racket.

Pretty tree lined street
Nov 2019 • Couples
Pretty tree lined street near the water. The trees were planted by notable people such as Amelia Earhart and a plaque displays who planted each tree and when.

Pretty cool
Aug 2019
While it really is just a bunch of large trees on a road, it is amazing to think that they were all planted by celebrities. The sheer size of some of these trees is amazing. My favourite tree was one planted by Babe Ruth.

Verdant Trees, Vocal Frogs, and Vibrant Birds
Jun 2019 • Solo
Hilo as a town is a pleasant surprise: it's historic, it's beautiful, and it's verdant. It rains a lot, leading to beautiful greenery everywhere with parks and trails galore. One such area is Banyan Tree Drive; a planned road around which many of the major hotels are. All along this road are huge old Banyan trees. Each tree has a plaque on the ground with the name of the politician, actor, or musician who planted it in the 1950s. In that 70 years, they've grown and aged well. The road is very shady and comfortable. Green vines are everywhere. The trees are the perfect habitat for vibrant birds and vocal coquí frogs, which come alive with song at night. There are beach and bay parks around the drive, with the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens at the far end. If you're on a driving tour of the island, it's worth your time to come here. I personally had a wonderful time running around the loop a few times on my visit; the sidewalk is large and safe away from the traffic. This would be a great place for an evening walk to just appreciate the trees and read the signs along the way; you may find one belonging to favorite movie star!

A quick drive through some beautiful trees
Dec 2018 • Family
While driving through Hilo, the detour to check out Banyan Drive is worth the 5-10 minutes to view the impressive rows of trees, many of the named or dedicated to famous personalities who have visited the city.

This is a beautiful drive. Each banyan tree has a plaque with the name of the famous person who planted the tree. It is worth the stop if you are in the area and have a few minutes.

Trees are interesting/Signs need a refresh
Jan 2019 • Couples
Worth a 10-minute drive-by, Banyan Drive is a unique, historic aspect of Hilo. The signs showing the people who planted the trees should be redone. Many are difficult to read or missing altogether.
