A little bit of beach camping mixed with local party ambience

Camping - getting there is easy enough, just slow down if you're coming from Kona and look for the exit sign just past the school zone. Its a 2 mile drive down a switchback road... read more

DO NOT BOOK HERE. LAST MINUTE CANCELLATIONS. NO APOLOGIES OR HELP FINDING NEW ACCOMMODATIONS. RUINED TWO DAYS OF OUR TRIP. I booked a two night stay for 15 students and faculty traveling from Maryland for a spring break travel study and paid the full $661.50 almost two months in advance. I received a booking confirmation in January, and another 'reminder'... More

If you picture yourself camping on the black sand beach by the ocean, this isn't the place. You are camping with as many as 50 other folks with the same ideas. We were there last year when the beach was closed because of dengue fever and it looked wonderful. There was no one there at the time, which is what... More

A lovely, off the beaten track gray sand beach in South Kona. Popular for camping and snorkeling. Clean and well maintained. Shade and picnic tables available. Though the parking was tight, the beach did not feel crowded...great snorkeling, sighted whales and enjoyed the peace while reading my book. Check it out!

Hubby (67) and myself (62) snorkeled here. We read about this park in a guidebook. A little tricky to find; the drive to the park itself is >2 miles on a one-lane (but asphalted) drive. Parking is at a minimum. However, we loved it here. The local citizens have taken over the care of the park. There are restrooms, outdoor... More

This was our favorite beach and was the only place in Hawaii that we went to twice. It was not crowded and about half the people there seemed to be locals instead of tourists. Our first time there the water was very calm for snorkeling. I saw a small octopus. The second time the waves were bigger and we enjoyed... More

Our favorite beach that we visited during our week on the Big Island. Isolated, rustic grey sand beach teaming with aquatic life. Camping is available and picnic tables are set up in the grassy area adjacent to the beach. A shack sells food and drink and also rents water sports equipment. We arrived in the morning and saw one turtle... More

The drive here was interesting, with a small one lane to the beach parking lot. There was a sign that said something like "Friends of Ho'Okena" pointing the way. Once you're here though, it was great! Secluded, with few people. The beach is a little steep with no real walkout into the water. Snorkeling was good, but it is difficult... More

This beach was the starting place for dengue fever, and is now closed to the people. This is not a state park, the folks that live there have to be careful of the Asian Tiger mosquitoes, which are different from others in that they will keep biting.
