Fairly large beach, black sand and lava landscape. Busy place, with lots of tourists. VERY hot...don't forget sunscreen. The day we visited, we saw a number of turtles, though at the waters edge and far enough out that it was touch to get a great picture. The sand and lava rocks are very hot and slippery in spots...wear some reliable... More

We didn't want to miss the opportunity to see a black sand beach while on the Big Island, and Punaluu did not disappoint. Beaches of a volcanic nature are in sharp contrast to typical "white" sand beaches. We were not treated to the view of many sea turtles during our visit, but the palm trees and stunning beauty of a... More

This is a great stop coming to or from kona and Hilo. One of the largest and most active black sand beaches on the Big Island. You"ll get great pictures of the very large light greenish colored turtles just sunning on the beach. Also saw some tents set up by travelers tight near the parking area.Of course, always pleasant heavy... More

We stopped here on our return from Kilauea -- very well marked. There are amenities, nice views, palms and shade, turtles, and a very hot beautifully black beach all within sight of a good parking area.

We made the stop at this beach while driving from Kona to Hilo. It was very easy to get to and we saw turtles everywhere, on the sand and in the water. This was such an interesting beach and it reminded me of crunched up Oreo cookies. We were on a mission to get to the volcano, but I would... More

We stopped to see the beautiful black sand, and we read that many visitors catch sightings of the honu. We saw a handful of honu swimming near the shore. It was an awesome sight to see! There was lots of shade on one side of the beach, and even picnic tables. The beach even had restrooms and lifeguards on duty.... More

After visiting the green sands beach we stopped here. How cool is this lavarock turned into sand!? The beach ws right off Route 11 and easy to get to. There were sea turtles hanging out on the sand and in the water. We were even able to swim pretty close to one. The sand was hot (obviously) and I would... More

Visit in the afternoon if you want to see turtles, we saw them at 3:00. The black sand is stunning! Free parking, bathrooms and the beach is free.

This was a unique sight for us, having never seen a truly black, black sand beach before. It really is an amazing sight. The beach has decent restrooms; and is easily accessible, even if one has limited mobility. The beach is, however, very touristy. Tour buses and vans are constantly dropping off groups and clogging up the parking lot. It... More
