A great stop recommended for everyone taking the scenic route! On a short hike (less than 0.5 miles) you pass by some parts of the Tropical Botanical Garden without the entrance fee. Down the hill are nice waterfalls and if you want to cross the river (max. knee deep) you have a great spot alone for you.

Onomea Bay is beautiful. If you follow the Scenic Route sign and follow it along you will pass through a rain forest and by a Botanical Garden. There are beautiful cliffs and you are able to walk down carefully.

Took the short and easy hike down the Onomea Trail a couple of days ago ( don't get this confused with Donkey Trail, this one is different). Awesome walk through beautiful trees, plants and flowers with scenic views of the bay. We continued straight where we reached a beautiful little waterfall stream to the left and the bay on the... We took the 4 mile scenic drive and stopped here for the overlook and realized we could walk down. The road is the back entrance to the botanical gardens and there is a narrow walking path that leads down to the beach. The water looked pretty treacherous and is not intended for swimming, however it was breathtakingly beautiful and relaxing.

Nice drive off Highway 19. A mile or two in (from the southern end) is a small trailhead from which you can hike down to the bay. We thought the hike was worth the time and effort -- a nice little break from the car with lots of photo opportunities.

This is a 4 mile scenic drive that doesn't disappoint. The views are spectacular. Don't forget to stop by Coconut Willy's and buy a cold coconut. He will cut it open for you to drink, then he will cut out the fresh coconut for you to take with you. Nicest guy!

We stumbled upon this Onomea Bay by coincidence. I am glad we did because this place is absolutely amazing. It's a short drive from Hilo. You park on the side of the road and walk down the side of the hill for about 10 minutes. The pictures don't do it any justice!

We were heading north from Hilo towards the Tropical Botanic Gardens and noticed cars parked alongside of the road. This is usually an indication that there is something to see we pulled over. Make sure you have shoes with good treads and mosquito repellent. Even though we walked only a short distance, the trail was muddy from the recent rain... More

We did the scenic drive to the bay from the Hilo side. Take your time, it's a slow road but an easy drive. Stop at the pull off and walk down to the bay. Make sure to take the Donkey Trail at the edge of the Hawaiian Botanical Gardens fence. Steep climb back but a paved trail. Wish we had... More

We took the gorgeous scenic route off Old Mamolahoa hwy to find a quaint hiking trail down the undeveloped coastline to Onomea Bay. We were blown away by the beauty and isolation once down past the botanical gardens (which we decided to skip after finding the cheaper more natural option). We did not see another human after we passed the... More
