Along the sides of the roads there are "craters" more like canyons, created by the volcano. Drive slow to see them. After the craters there is a scenic drive down to the cliffs and the rocky edge. The road is 20 miles of driving total....More

Having driven this road on past visits, I finally got to see the billowing steam rising from lava pouring into the ocean. It's a beautiful drive with many stops along the way. The sea arch at the end is worth a stop. It's a 10...More

Plan on an hour or two (with plenty of gas) to drive this well-maintained paved road with stops at a variety of viewpoints and trails. You can't get lost; it's a single, two-lane road from the "top" of the park to the "bottom." Highlights are...More

You must take your time to perform this entire drive. There are at least 15 potential stops so plan for a whole day. The views in certain places are spectacular! You will see lava fields, older and newer, splendid ocean views, nenes (Hawaii's national geese)...More

Don't go to the park and not take the time to drive this route. My husband didn't quite get it. He thought it was just another road to a crater. He was in awe. There are many lava flows to see and several areas to...More

Most people take a photo of the sea arch at the end of the road. However, for the best photo, stop at the unmarked pullout as soon as the road reaches the coast. You need to walk out onto the lava (but not right to...More
