Lovely Historic Cottage
Jun 2021
It's a must to stop into this historic house and chat with the charming southern bell historian. She has an incredible amount of history to share with you about the area the canal and Savannah River. There is a beautiful park area to enjoy and a very nice pathway to view the old lochs, and waterway with the rapids and small water falls. Beautiful area to visit. They also offer kayak rentals along the waterway.

Loved this place
Apr 2021 • Couples
We happened upon this place by accident on our honeymoon and I'm sure glad we did. What an amazing site with a rich history. Anyone looking for a wedding or picnic venue, check this place out! I unfortunately got sick and we weren't able to spend a lot of time there, but when we move down there we definitely will.

Beautiful... what I could see. Needs event planners... read on!

How could a nice park like this get less than 5 stars?

This was my first planned stop following a 2-hour drive from (near) Atlanta. GPS took me directly to it, and I found parking (handicapped) easily beside the small, white Visitor Center. I tried to use the restroom, but it was locked and the Center was not open. Sigh.

I started my journey along the river just below the VC and wanted to head towards the covered bridge crossing the Savannah River. But I saw an event happening under a pavilliion so I climbed a hill to go around it. But I was stopped by the wedding party. Sigh. Here's the problem with that:

Of my own accord, I went around where the wedding was being held. Walking with a cane and a dog, I climbed the hill just for purposes of doing so. Rather than asking me to go yet another different route, I was simply told "no, you can't come through here".

Though frustrated and desperately needing a restroom, I DO NOT blame the wedding party or those who stopped me.

Of course I did not go anywhere near the celebration. I walked the other way... away from what I just drove 2 hours to see; away from the nearest restroom; and right back down a steep hill I just climbed. I got back in my car to seek a restroom, and found myself near the exit so, with other stops planned, I just left. Sigh.

It is my opinion that the Visitor Center should have marked off restricted areas that were rented to the wedding party. I was stopped at the top of the hill ABOVE the pavillion. They should also provide some indication for alternate ways to maneuver the park during such events. How much would an "arrow sign" or "this way please" cost?

I would have taken tons of pictures I'm sure, but instead, I have only one. Sigh.

So my star rating is directed toward the managers of the park, not the park itself - It appears to be lovely though I didn't see the vast majority of it. I have no plan to visit Augusta, GA. anytime in the future, so I guess it's just my loss. Sigh.

Swimming hole
Sep 2020 • Family
The trail head goes all the way down to Olmsted Lake. There’s a little swimming hole that is fed by two waterfalls. It’s a local place with a swing rope to go out into the swimming hole. What a great place on a warm afternoon. It’s pet friendly so the dogs loved the swim!

Stop by here on my way out of town. Headed to South Carolina to see waterfalls and made this my first stop of the trip. They were a lot of runners here and a lot of beautiful scenery

Great place to walk and relax

We went to the Savannah Rapids visitor Center and then walked the Augusta canal trail. Walked 2 miles south and then back 2 miles. The total distance can be as much as 8 miles on this trail. Lots of wildlife and history as you walk this trail. Good place to get away from the business of life.

We spent a couple of hours here. It is fascinating to see the river split off into the canal and how powerful it can be. The Riverwalk begins here and heads to downtown Augusta. You can do a loop from the pavilion area around the canal and then back up by the visitor center. There is a bike station and kayak rentals and a launch site there. The visitor center had just been painted so everything was kinda' a mess but the lady was very helpful and gave us a few pamphlets that helped us with some questions.

A great starting point for exploration
Dec 2019
The visitor center is informative and well-situated at a location, Savannah Rapids Park, that is scenic year-round. After loading up on information, treat yourself to the trails in the adjacent Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, the history of which is inextricably tied up with the Savannah River and its rapids. Touted as the only intact industrial canal in the American South in continuous use, the falling water of the mighty Savannah was put to both very good and quite dubious use over time. These trails offer excellent views of both the canal and the river in various spots, including the rapids. The trails are beautifully maintained, with frequent signage and amazingly clean restrooms.
