This place is popular with cruise ship tour groups, so try (if possible) to see it when ships are not in port. While not large, it is still large enough to find a peaceful spot to absorb the natural beauty around you. The trails are often rough and uneven, so this is not a good place to visit if you are mobility impaired. You don’t need a guide to enjoy the gardens, but the guides are very knowledgeable and will do various demonstrations with the cacao beans and other plants.…

We had a wonderful guide take us though the gardens which I highly recommend. The gardens are lovely but be sure to note that the paths are uneven and can be dangerous for some. In fact, a man in our group fell and injured himself while on the path. We loved the beautiful setting and learning about plants naturally found in Honduras. This was surprisingly delightful.…

There were about a dozen or so of us and I would say that it was difficult to keep up with the guide because we were on the trail and people like me want to take pictures and listen at the same time. In order to get a decent picture you have to wait for the area to clear of the group then you miss what the guide is saying. I do not know what the answer to this issue is. We were so lucky to have Mr. Brady give us our tour. He is so knowledgeable of the island and all the vegetation in the gardens. It was beautiful and enjoyed the experience.

Took a break from the beach for a nature hike, what we got was a thorough education of Honduran vegetation. If you want to take a self guided tour it is less expensive and you are provided a map. However, if you really want to learn about the island, the local plants, and the history then spend the extra for a guided tour. We chose the guided tour and had a fantastic experience. We joined a tour in progress (cruise passengers) and then received a one-on-one tour with the owner. After an entertaining education from Bill, and a snack of seasonal fruit, he arranged for a guide to take us through the jungle trail to the top of the mountain for spectacular views. It was nice to have someone familiar with the trail and cut down bamboo for walking sticks. While we saw lots of fauna we did not see wildlife. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys hiking and nature. Teens may find it boring unless they are into nature.…
