A place to spend a half hour
Feb 2020
We had a little time to kill so we went to this small museum just up from the docks. There is some back ground info on the geology of Lake Atitlan and some Maya artifacts. One of our group is a diver, so he was very interested in the small part of the museum dedicated to the Maya ruins that are now underwater. You could not take any photos in this portion of the museum. We walked around the hotel area after visiting the museum for soe nice views of the lake.

Interesting underground museum

We were walking down to the lake when we spotted the hotel on the left. There is a Mayan ruin that exists under the hotel and for a fee you can go see it.

Bad experience at what used to be an excellent place

I used to love this restaurant; but the service and the quality of the food have declined wthe point of mediocrity. We were there for lunch with a party of 4. The service was terribly slow; even though we were the only ones in the restaurant. I had the pepper steak; which was below mediocre; although the prices were quite high.

I've only stayed here once but it is in a perfect location to be able to walk pretty much anywhere. The hotel feels very safe. The rooms are wonderful, nice comfy beds, good wifi. The staff was very helpful and kind. Great breakfast!

Not impressed 🙁

I have stayed at various places in Guatemala and I realize that this is a 3rd world country but for the price I expected a better nights sleep. Apparently they were having a wedding while we were there and the family had a party in the dinning area directly above our room and in the hallway all night long, the beds were equivalent to sleeping on a concrete floor and when I complained about the noise the next morning to the front desk I was simply told that I should have complained the night before, which I don't disagree but I expected at the very least a "I'm sorry you had this experience" but the employee checking us out couldn't have cared less about our experience. Our room was cold and I was wrapped up trying to stay warm and trying to sleep, my phone call could have stopped the noise in the hallway but I'm sure they would not have shut down the party above our room, it also would not have made my mattress any better.
I will say the rooms were quite nice, the setting was amazing and it's hard to beat the charm this place offers but due to our experience I will not be staying at this hotel again.

while the museum was tiny, it was interesting. i mostly enjoyed the room underneath the main hall dedicated to Samabaj. we almost missed it but read about it in our lonely planet guide and returned. when we asked about it, an employee told us to go down the small sidewalk and take off our shoes upon entering. there was a woman giving a talk about this mystical part of lake Atitlan and it was quite alluring. if you have an hour, it is worth a peek.

Informative

This is a very small museum on the hotel grounds. It has great explanation about volcanoes around the lake, what kind they are and the formation of them and the lake.
Also map that shows the mane of each one.
Also, has pottery from the area and the lake. Nice displays but they need cards next to pots so you know more about the individual pots.
Worth the stop. It does not take long to go through. Maybe 1/2 hours.
