The funnest part was the drive there in our 4x4 rental. At our time the roads were dry - travelled in March. Wouldn't have wanted to try the road in the rainy season. Was fun bumping along the washed out roads in our 4x4 and made the experience humerous. The view at the end to see the 1000 foot falls itself wasn't overly spectacular but we enjoyed our excursion as we went out and about when we wanted to - not with a group on a tour. …

Unless you are really wanting to get a look at the orange-breasted falcon, this is a long drive just to get a distant view of the top of the waterfall. Oh, and there are some NASTY no-see-ums in the picnic area.

On the day we visited 1000 Foot Falls, the sky was clear and visibility was spectacular. Felt like we could see these beautiful mountains for miles. By the time we arrived it was nearly midday---not the best time for birding. Nevertheless, we did find a lot of great birds there. Our lovely picnic lunch (under a pavilion right by the falls overlook) was interrupted several times for warblers, swifts, vireos, kites, and, THE rare bird to see here, the Orange-breasted Falcon. (Some captive bred falcons have been released here in an effort to save the species.) The platform for viewing the falls is pretty far from the cataract, but it is still a spectacular sight. Best of all, we were the only folks there at the time. Priceless.…

Hadn't planned on going to this waterfall but missed a turn for the Big Rock waterfall and decided to check this out. Really beautiful. We had a rental jeep with 4 wheel drive and it was necessary in a few places. The road to this waterfall is about 30 miles long and very rutted. A normal car couldn't transverse it. This attraction is for the very adventurous.…

We had a rental car--as we confessed that we planned to go into the mountains we were given an old beat-up Honda--and went to many attractions in this area. The change over from jungle to pine forest was rather abrupt. Much of the drive is in logged over areas, but the stumps and debris were old enough to be mostly covered over. There were occasional pockets of thick pine forest. There were a few very muddy spots, so I would only attempt in a high clearance vehicle, or 4WD. Once we reached the 1,000 foot falls, we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, it is true that you are not right next to the falls, but in reality they are much closer and more impressive than they appear in photographs. The forest is thick around this area and the pine clad mountains were gorgeous! The air was fresh and cool. We found it to be worth the drive, but we were out and about anyway.…
