After our visit to the Mayan ruins of Caracol, we drove to las Cuevas. I had contacted them a few weeks before and asked them if it was possible to stay at the station. Yes, it was possible, so we decided to stay there for 3 nights. We had bought our own food, which you can cook in the kitchen yourself. But the ladies in the kitchen were very friendly and prepared our meals. The station caters mainly for local and international students, but it is possible to go there as an independant traveller. It's in the middle of the rainforest and the camp itself is an open area in the forest. It's a great place for birdwatching and yoy can make shorter walks to a lookout tower, Mayan Ruins or a longer walk to the river. We like the place and saw many bird species. this former scientific research station is remaking itself into an eco and wildlife destination. Albert owner of BZM tours arranged this stay after our visit to Caracol. We had a cook along with us. There is a birding tower to hike to to see sunset. Rudy, Albert's cousin, successfully got me up and down the steep trail to the tower. The next morning we took a jungle walk hoping to see jaguar but were not successful but i did see one in my dream the night before. This is a simple but satisfying place to visit.…

Belize Magnificent tours organized a 2 night trip for us to the Las Cuevas Biological Station, took us there, provide the tours and the food. It was magnificent. The facilities are simple, but very comfortable. The rooms are dorm rooms, each with two single beds and bathrooms and showers on the same floor. There is a deck just outside the rooms with comfortable chairs for relaxing and watching the jungle. They can also take you on a hike through a small cave and up to an observation tower where you can see the whole canopy and mountains. Finally you can go on some hikes on your own. But best of all is the peace and serenity. You are so far from everything that the only sounds you hear are the sounds of nature.…
