historic cemetary

We stopped here on a rainy day - this cemetery is not large and is quite historic but I was surprised that it's not being kept in better condition.

When my kids were little they loved to walk through the Ute Cemetery looking at the different headstones while my husband would tell them stories of the people buried there... This summer it was off limits as we has a couple of bears that were in the area raising havoc!

If you like cemeteries, this one is a must while in Aspen! Two of our foursome aren't really into that, but thoroughly enjoyed it and glad they went. It's in the vicinity of the historic downtown by the base of the mountain. The cemetery is actually by a neighborhood and you have to look for the sign and entrance on... More

If you are looking at your phone while walking by, you'll miss it - this place is a cool piece of history hidden behind weeds and aspen trees, but so worth the small hike.

Some monuments date back to the mining days, the civil war, and everything in between. There is a large central place devoted to Elk Club members, as well as a segment of the cemetary devoted to members of the Jewish faith. It is a lovely quiet place to visit, take time to walk about in the Summer and fall, to... More

If visiting a cemetery is your thing, you shouldn't be disappointed with this one. After years of disuse and decay, restoration was complete in 2003. It is, however, rustic, as you might imagine. It amazed me that they had quite a few Civil War veterans buried here. They had a pretty descriptive and thorough brochure at the entrance but unfortunately... More

My friends and I stopped by this cemetery the weekend before Halloween. It's a neat path to walk and the sites are spread out around the path. It's an interesting piece of Colorado history.

While visiting Aspen this July I walked thru the Ute Cemetery. Although I had passed it on many occasions during previous visits I had never taken the paths thru the cemetery. It does have a feeling of peace. I was intrigued by the graves there and the beauty of the wildness of the natural enviroment, the artistry of the headstones;... More

The Ute Cemetery is a great example of a frontier burial ground. Random plots strewn through the hillside. Just far enough away from the center of town that you can find a peace that has existed here for many years. Aspen Walking Tours LLC offers special walks telling the stories of the pioneers buried here.
