Well maintained, well signed, gorgeous trail along the former Rio Grande railroad route. So, inclines (and declines) are gradual. It is about 42 miles from end to end, slightly uphill to Aspen, slightly downhill all the way to Glenwood Springs. You will get off in...More

Friday morning. We'd heard you could bike along the river from Aspen to Basalt. We heard wrong. Renting our bikes from Basalt Bike and Ski (very helpful, very good bikes), we headed out. Only the first 30 minutes was scenic and by the river. After...More

We've ridden this 15mi trail many, many times from Aspen to Basalt. It is downhill from Aspen and takes you next to, then up above and along the Roaring Fork River all the way to Basalt. It is a challenging ride back, because you face...More

We rented bikes from Four Mountain Sports located in Aspen and Snow Mass, Colorado. We picked up the Rio Grande path in downtown Aspen and rode to Woody Creek. It was mostly a downhill paved road so an easy ride. At times I was speeding...More

Aspen is surrounded by hiking trails suitable for anyone--youngsters to alpine experts. The investment in signage, trail maintenance, etc. is impressive. Stop by the Visitor Information Center near Main Street to get trail maps. The Rio Grande Trail starts very nearby, is very accessible and...More

Two years ago we rode uphill from GWSprings to Carbondale, and glided back downhill to GWSprings. This year we decided to take the shuttle offered by Glenwood Adventures. $39 includes bike rental. They dropped us off in Carbondale, and first we rode gently uphill to...More

Get out of Aspen and see the countryside! We got bikes from the hotel and got on to the Trail (very easy to find). We rode for a few hours, beautifully maintained trail and lovely scenery, of course.

Some of the bike rentals include free shuttle return and some hotels offer free bikes. It's a relatively easy 9 mile ride, mostly downhill, (I was riding a one-speed bike) to Woody Creek Tavern along the Rio Grande Trail. The ride starts off in a...More

You will pass by a few towns. We stopped and had lunch in Basalt- that is where I would check for hotels and B&Bs...kind of a mid point on the trail. We stopped for coffee @ Bonfire Roasters in Carbondale, another cute town.
