We came to Aspen really to see Maroon Bells and we were not disappointed. We decided we really didn't want to take the shuttle so we opted for an after 5 visit so we could bring our car. I highly recommend this because we had plenty of daylight still and it was not very crowded. The lake is absolutely gorgeous around sunset, I think it's honestly some of the prettiest scenery around. We saw a lot of wildlife. We spotted a bear on the road on the way up, and while at the lake, saw a fox and a herd of deer. We watched the deer chase the fox around for a while, definitely never seen that before! We also saw 3 other foxes on the road on the way back to town. It had been warm that day but was pretty chilly when we went up, I was cold even with a jacket. There are some picnic tables right near the parking lot, around the river, and several benches around the lake. Seeing this was definitely worth the side trip to Aspen, it is heart achingly beautiful.

We lucked into a first come, first serve site at Queen Bell campground. When we opened our camper van back doors, we had a gorgeous stream and direct view of Maroon Bells. Due to reservation system, we had not been able to schedule a van ride up the mountain, or even a shuttle. Staying at the campground allowed us to get a pass to drive up the mountain. We had a beautiful Thursday hike. There were small crowds on the first trails but the crowds dissipated as we hiked towards Crater Lake.

Amazing view! Be sure to make shuttle reservations ahead of time. The shuttle driver shared interesting facts on the ride. Two terrific hikes made this our favorite day in the area

This is an easy experience to have when visiting Aspen. We are not hikers. This was a place that we felt we appreciate the beauty of hiking without going on a hike. We took a shuttle up to the drop off point at Maroon Bells. Once we got off the bus, the peaks were right there. We walked around the lake for a minute and then took by the shuttle right back down. The shuttle takes 15 minutes each way. Anyone can do this activity. Take the elderly or the small kids. It’s beautiful!

Natural beauty in a small package!

We decided to take an afternoon drive to visit Maroon Bells while staying in Aspen. We found the park to be quaint. We were surprised to find the lake smaller than we expected. The trail was even and easy to traverse. The trees and mountain views were lovely. You can see the easily accessible area in less than an hour. If you are up for more of a hike, allow 2-3 hours so you can go to the second lake. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
