A very local funky museum with lots of fun exhibits including what happened to the hat? (and the suspects in its disappearance) this exhibit includes some great vintage women's hats. Plus lots of mining exhibits and exhibits of regional interest. Enjoyed the museum on a rainy afternoon and its total lack of pretension.

Very interesting historical museum about the early start of Auburn and the gold rush. Only takes about 30 minutes to review. Across the street from the Saturday Farmers Market.

This is a must stop on your tour of Auburn. this beautiful restored, working courthouse features one of the only womans holding jail cell left standing { in this case located under the courthouse outer stairs ] from around the late 1800s, Inside is the museum which features a MOST impressive collection of the largest sizes of local gold discovered... This little gem of a museum has quite a range of exhibits. There is much information about Auburn- The Endurance Capita- related to the Tevis Cup 100 mile horseback endurance ride from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Auburn and also the 100-mile endurance run. There are even gold nuggets! There is a nice display of arrowheads and a display of... More

American Indians and the Gold Rush had two different implications on the local history but the exhibits in the Museum do well in telling both stories. There are several displays of Indian Crafts, baskets, clothes, plus tools and other objects from the early days of the Gold Rush. The displays are a bit dark and hard to read accompanying placards... Need to fill some time in Auburn and was totally surprised. Great museum! Well presented, nice artifacts plus it was free. The gold nuggets on display are amazing.

I have lived in the Auburn Area for fifteen years and only last year did I visit the Placer County Historical Museum. What a Gem hidden the foothills, just off Hwy 80.

Nice little museum inside the restored county courthouse. For me the main attraction was the huge gold nugget. Don't think about taking it home though, it is well protected is a special vault.

It is a great building to visit. It is a supremely large brick building with a capital cupola on the top that is reminiscent of the style of government building in the 19th century. It's very well kept and is a great example of what some of the old building in Auburn looked like during the gold rush period. In... More

A great place to bring visiting friends that would enjoy some of the history of Old Auburn. It took about an hour and a half to walk around all the sites of old town and the docent was knowledgeable and full of information. Every Saturday morning.....try to pick a cool day as it can get pretty hot during summer months.
