Known as the "Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation". The Cottage is where Lincoln lived with his family at the height of the Civil War. The Cottage is located on a picturesque hilltop in Northwest Washington, DC. Opened to the public for the first time in 2008 after being restored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Cottage is the only designated National Monument in DC and the only National Monument in the country that is operated by a non-profit. Guided tours of the Cottage focus on Lincoln's ideas and offer visitors an intimate view of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and private life. Visitors are also invited to browse exhibits in the adjacent Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center. Tickets are required for entry to the Cottage, and advanced ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Weekend tours often sell out completely.

We've lived in the Virginia suburbs of DC for more than 30 years and decided on a whim to visit Lincoln's cottage with our 13 and 15 year old granddaughters. We were not disappointed. The house itself is on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in northwest Washington, DC. It is a quiet place that once served as... More

Having seen most of the highlights (and there are so many!) in Washington, DC, we set out to explore some of the lesser-known historic attractions. My daughter and I were extremely impressed by the exceptional skills of docent Phoebe who told anecdotes about the President, his wife, family, and visitors that really showed all sides of Lincoln and allowed us... My mother and I were able to visit here. I love history and I couldn't leave without visiting this place. Beautiful and peaceful place.

After visiting DC multiple times we were looking for some less famous attractions and were sent here by a friend. Not sure how we missed over the years but it was a very worthwhile visit. The history was very interesting and it's just a beautiful - peaceful place.

We headed here on our way out of the city. It was a little hard to find, because the signage was not great. Once in, we paid our tickets and went into the little museum before our tour. Definitely spend some time in the museum as it gives you more of an idea of the time the president spent at... More

We went to visit the Lincoln summer cottage because we were looking for something we have not done in the area, despite having lived nearby for decades, because the site and tour received very good reviews, and because we like to take long walks and the cottage is on an extensive campus at the Armed Services Retirement home. First, the... More

3 1/2 miles from the White House, the 'country home' is surrounded by 200 acres of quiet, trees and birds. It was Lincoln's getaway from the hubbub and demands of the Presidency. Personal insights into the man come alive here. Fills in some gaps. One quarter of Lincoln's presidency was spent here. It is also home to a few hundred... More

My daughter was married at the cottage. It was such a pretty location. We had indoor and outdoor space. There was plenty of free parking for the guests. Everyone commented on the venue.

I am so glad my husband and I decided to visit here! We bought our tickets in advance as they suggest, and we put 140 Rock Creek Church Rd NW into our GPS. Once you pass the gate and tell the attendant where you are going there is a parking lot with free parking, which in DC is very exciting.... More

I generally look at the “terrible” Tripadvisor ratings to get a contrary view. You can't please everybody, but eighty-six percent of reviewers (as of September 28, 2016 gave it an “excellent” or “very good” rating). The “excellent” ratings were very well written. I suggest that you read some of them because they matched my own experience. It is also worth... More
