It was supposed to see a nice place for a sunny Saturday, the Zoo area is amazing but the maintenance of the cages and the glasses to see the animals were dirty and dark rooms. It was difficult to see everything. The stores were closed and only automatic coke machines were in order. It sould charge for entrance so there will be funding to renovate/clean.

Children will love seeing the animals including the pandas and the chance to see the sea lions beneath the water. All the basic facilities you would expect are available.

This is a large zoo but we were so disappointment. We've lived in the area for many years and remember when the zoo had so many animals. First of all, we paid $30 to park, though the zoo entrance itself is free. The good : bathrooms are clean and plentiful, and the zoo is beautifully landscaped. So if you just want a nice walk in a beautiful environment, it may be worth the money. But a large part of the zoo is closed off (including the aviary, duck and bird exhibits). There are almost no large animals--only 3 elephants, a tiger, 2 lionesses and 2 bears. I would estimate 40% of the exhibits are empty or had animals not visible. No large monkeys except a lone gorilla. The monkey house is nearly empty and the think tank (home to orangutans) is mostly a museum with just a couple of orangutans on display --they just laid still in the corner of the cages, which looked neglected and in need of repair. Golden lion tamarins used to swing freely through a wooded area and now are confined to a small glass room. The once wonderful "Amazonia" building now houses many fewer animals than orginally. The big room that is supposed to be a rain forest has mostly plants that are dying with just a couple of birds in it. Finally, if you don't bring your own food (which is allowed, thank goodness), you will be shelling out plenty. A hamburger is almost $15; other food is ridiculously priced as well. Such a disappointment since we remember the zoo when it was so wonderful.

The good news is they now have parking spaces for $25 but it's worth every penny because you park right at the front of the zoo there's no charge to get in however there are very many closed displays and most of the displays only had one animal so if they were eating or playing in a different section you didn't get to see them I would bet 50% of the animals that we went to look for we couldn't find or they weren't there at all I was surprised that there was not much staff outside of the cage areas because there were some tour guides that were screaming so loud people were actually leaving

This is by far the largest and most amazing zoo we have ever been to! Be prepared to walk a lot! So much to see and you don't want to miss any of it! Only complaint we can say is the chicken fingers are too spicey at the grill restaurant there.

Amazing place, we were on holiday from the uk, was extremely excited to find this and it was free!!! Pre booked tickets in advance, and was blown away by the size of the zoo, even more happy to see the pandas a rare opportunity. Even the food in the cafeteria was pleasantly surprising a decent portion and tasted great.
We spent about 5 hours here, just two adults but plenty for younger ages
Couldn’t praise this enough

Beautiful zoo. We enjoyed it although some of the more common animals you'd expect to find at a zoo were missing like camels, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, kangaroos,

We’ve been to the Atlanta zoo and the Knoxville zoo both and they are incredibly better than the Smithsonian zoo. We were very underwhelmed at what we saw to be the national zoo. It was still a lot of fun and free to get in so it was definitely worth it.
