My wife and her family did trail 9 to Harney Peak. It was 6.6 miles round trip with 1100 ft elevation change. The view at the top is worth every step. It is amazing. It is defiantly not an easy hike but worth the challenge....More

This is a great hike if your near Sylvan Lake. Give yourself about five hours because you may want to linger along the way or at the lookout. Take plenty of water and enjoy.

This is a great moderate/challenging family hike - our kids age 7 years and 3 1/2 years both hiked the entire way with us (total hike time going our leisurely family pace was 4 hours). We checked the weather forecast multiple times before hiking and...More

We had a great time hiking Harney Peak. It has many great views along the way and the views from the top are spectacular. The trip is about 6 miles round trip. I'm 52 and am not in great shape. We took it slow on...More

So I was not at all excited to do this hike but TripAdvisor said it wasn't going to be bad. Well I didn't make it. If you are out of shape avoid this hike. It is 95% uphill, and very few spots to rest. My...More

We took trail 9 up and trail 4 down, which was perfect for us. The view at the top of the hike is gorgeous, but it was far too windy for us to eat our lunch or even spend much time at all. We turned...More

This was a quick day hike I decided to make last minute after reading it was one of the more popular and scenic hikes in the Black Hills. Not only that, but it also brings you to the highest point too! Its a great viewing...More

We made this into a loop with Little Devil's Tower leaving from Sylvan Lake. This is a somewhat strenuous hike; however, as long as you are in decent shape you should be able to do it. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone with knee issues...More

Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak) is the highest point in South Dakota. There are several hiking routes to the top and I chose to take the one that begins just off of highway 244 at the Willow Creek Horse Camp. From here...More

We saw a lot of great stuff in South Dakota but our hike to Harney Peak was our best experience! We decided to give it a try with our 2 boys, 10 and 13, and we do all hike but not usually distances like this...More

We want to do both trails 4 & 9 to go up/down Harney's Peak since we want to do the Little Devils trail spur. Is it better to go up 4 and then down 9 or vice versa? We will be starting at Sylvan Lake and most likely won't start until after we check into our Sylvan Lake cabin at 2pm, June 2, 2017.

Gee. I'd have no way of knowing. It depends on sun, temps. We've started up before when it was fine at trailhead and turned around when we hit ice after about a mile. That was in early May. You could try, see what happens. I... More
