This state park is really a gem and you can see many locals visiting here for a picnic or a quick visit to the falls. The high Shoals loop trail is classified as “strenuous” and I believe it is so because of the many steps and incline along the way. But it is actually totally manageable and I saw plenty... More

This place is gorgeous. Very nice bathrooms too. We only stayed the night but I'd definitely go back here. It was further off the interstate than my phone map led me to believe but it was worth it. Park Ranger was so sweet and helpful!

South Mountain State Park has been one of my favorite places for 30+ years. I've been here multiple times and I never grow tired of it. This place is gorgeous and well kept. It is a tough hike with lots of steep steps but the climb is well worth it The trail is easy to follow with lots of spots... More

This place is just Awesome. Our grandchildren just loved it. They have Camping Sites and a lot of picnic tables to. Lost of trails, horse trails as well.

We headed to the South Mountains State Park to trek some of the waterfalls and we were ecstatic. The trek to the High Shoal falls was wonderful and the trail itself had rocks, narrow bridges, tree stumps and steps to climb up. There are portions of the waterfall where you can take a deviation and dip your toes in cool... More

I recently visited this state park with 3 other couples. We are all up for hiking and adventure so this state park caught our eye while in the area for a wedding weekend. We hiked up to the scenic overlook, which took a little less than 2 hours to complete. We stopped at the visitor center, did not have to... More

Took family for a quick trip. We hike up to the falls and they were beautiful. My family really enjoyed seeing the stream and waterfall. It is beautiful and educational. It is a must to visit if you are in the area with friends or family. It was free and educational trip with a great experience for my family.

This hike has it all! It starts off innocuously enough, with a leisurely stroll on a wide, well maintained dirt trail along Shinny Creek. Halfway up the path narrows and becomes boulder stairs, making it interesting enough to make you committed. And then between the stairs and boulder scrambling, you WANT to get to the top to see the falls.... More

Whether you are a serious hiker or just want a stroll in the woods. South Mountain State Park is perfect. We chose to hike to the top of the waterfall then to the top of one of the mountains. It was tough at times but definitely doable. The river is beautiful and once you are at the top the views... More
