While I would hardly characterize my experience in the Rubies via Lamoille Canyon as uncrowded- campground and trailhead parking lot was packed, trails very busy- the scenery was nearly equal to many National Parks, yet without the congestion and hubub that so many of them have. The hiking here is excellent and I hope to return someday for some overnight backpacking.... We noticed the Ruby Mountains were about halfway between Lake Tahoe and Grand Teton, so decided to spend a couple of nights nearby. It was a highlight; and much, much better than visiting Yellowstone! We arrived mid afternoon, so drove up Lamoille Canyon to do the short walk to Island Lake. Stunning drive up the canyon; beautiful "garden" of wildflowers... More

This was our second consecutive year visiting the balloon festival and first time the weather was favorable for ascent. In 2014 the weather was cold and windy and the balloonists while unable to launch, did try to give the assembled crowd an experience – flaring for balloon glow night and tethering on launch day for some stationary rides for the... Loved the geography, did the same hike as 765matt and used the same shuttle, Larry (larryspradlin@backpackingintherubymountains.info). Larry's a great guide and reliable and flexible! Recommend the hike - and on the way back to Salt Lake City, climbed Deseret Peak in Utah. Beautiful, strenuous climb.

The Ruby Mountains, where's that?. This is the question you will hear over and over again from coastal friends East and West- but ignorance is bliss! We hiked the Ruby Crest trail end to end in late September with hardly a human or horse to be seen over 4 days. The hunters arrive by Oct 1, so plan your hike... More

I did not anticipate the Ruby Valley to be as nice as it was when I planned to drive through on my way to Great Basin National Park. I took Hwy 229 into the park, which is off of the I80 (Exit 321). It is around 80 miles to the south end of the mountain range. The drive takes you... More

It's a steep hike to the lakes, about 2 hours, my girls did it, ages 11 and 14 they liked the scenery just not the hike. It's a great spot to have lunch, no mosquitoes, quiet, no bears but very remote.

The festival was right outside of Elko Nevada September 26 - 29. We arrived early on September 28 to watch the balloonists prepare their balloons for the mass ascension. It was a beautiful sight. The evening before (Friday) we had fun watching the Balloon glow event in Mountain View Park. This event had a very local small town feel to... More

If you like remote places, then this will work for you. It's a 3.5 hour drive from Salt Lake City, over 4 hours from Reno, NV. Camped in Lamoille Canyon in September 2012. Gorgeous mountain range in Eastern Nevada. Creeks, waterfalls, lakes, trails. The scenic drive is stunning, and several great trailheads that take you up to lakes. Be prepared... More

As a Nevada resident I was pleased and surprised about the Ruby Mountains. I had heard about the Ruby's for years and had not the opertunity to make it out. The Ruby's are totally unexpected for Nevada. It is a classic "U" shaped glacier carved valley. Lamollie creek has many beaver dams and on a hike up to Thomas Canyon... More
