Cameron Prairie has the visitor's center for the entire southwest Louisiana refuge complex -- Cameron Prairie, Sabine, Lacassine, Shell Keys. We found the ranger at the VC to be friendly and helpful. From our home in the northeast, my wife and I make national parks and refuges the focal point of most of our travels. Cameron Prairie was very nice,... More

If you are anywhere close to this refuge it is well worth the visit. Whilst the bird life was limited at the time of year we visited it was wonderfully diverse. But the highlight was the drive around the wider swamp/marsh and the alligators. Some were extremely curious and climbed out of the water to take as much interest in... More

We stopped at this board walk to stretch out a bit and it was a gem!.. It was a perfect week day with no one else there and we walked quietly and slowly... The wild things came to life! Nine gators very near the boardwalk all sunning themselves after a cool morning... Two turtles... One snake.. One deer.... And hundreds... More

A 30 minute drive south off of I-10 near Lake Charles, LA is the Refuge. We arrived at the Refuge just after closing time of the range station, so we took the tour on our own. They call this a "PRAIRIE" but back home we call it a swamp. regardless it is worth a look. There is a mile long... More

Great way to watch and photograph wildlife from the safety of your vehicle. I've visited 3 different time and had 3 different experiences. All were enjoyable. During the most enjoyable visit, I saw several large alligators with catching and eating a large bird. I also saw several different species of birds. Herons, Black Necked Stilts and ducks were plentiful.

Lots of variety of wading birds, ducks and shorebirds. All within easy viewing distance. Several hawks also observed. A great placer to view alligators too.

The National Wildlife Refuges are one of the best kept secrets around. They not only preserve the existence of wildlife, they also build infrastructure so that humans can observe and learn about nature. The Pintail Drive is the featured attraction within the Cameron Prairie NWR. It is a well laid out road through the marsh bringing you close to Louisiana... More

Drove there from Galveston. Long drive and the terrain was a bit bleak. The wildlife refuge was very nice. Helpful visitor center. Lots of birds to see as you drive around. Places to hike, as well as a couple of short boardwalks, with benches, for close viewing for those less rugged types. A lovely day.

We recently decided to spend the day in Cameron Parish. We had never been to this Refuge and decided to take a drive thru the three-mile loop. It was fantastic! The Canadian Geese were just moving in on their migration south. Thousands of these beautiful birds could be seen, along with other species as well. So glad we took the... More

We visited on a Saturday when all amenities are closed. OK, perhaps federal employees are entitled to a day off but you would think a visitor center would at least have a portapotty available for weekend use! This one does not (stop at the gas station just north of the refuge). The wildlife drive on the east side of the... More
