After driving Highway 101 through the National Redwood Forest we thought the Avenue of the Giants would be more of the same, but it wasn't. It was so worth the extra trip! We drove through with the top down on our convertible and that made...More

This in my opinion is an absolutely must do if you are in the area. It is easy to find off the 101, well marked with signs. It is definitely slower than the 101 but the 31 miles of Redwoods is truly worth seeing. Leave...More

This is the 1st chance to see the Coastal Redwoods while driving Hwy 101 north from San Francisco. There are many more chances to come, but this is an iconic tourist area. The road is very narrow 2 lane section of the former Hwy 101...More

If you want to spend time enjoying the trees, this is the way to travel - off the main highway. It gives you innumerable spots to jump out and pose with your favorite tree(s). Be sure and stop at the visitor center about halfway through....More

This is very much a Grand Canyon type experience. You may driven three tree tunnels before, this is more like a tree cathedral. Trees up to 2000 years old and 300 feet tall. Just can't image it you have to go stand as an ant...More

If you've driven up CA1, you've seen better. While there are many large redwoods, this is far from being choc-a-bloc with them.

Headed north on 101 and got off just above Garberville to take the scenic route of the AOTG. You obviously move more slowly than on the freeway, but it is well worth it. No where have we been where we saw more of the big...More

The Avenue of the Giants is definitely worth the detour off HWY 101. It is about a 30-mile road that runs, somewhat parallel to the 101, on the east side of the river, but the view is so much better, as it winds through redwood...More

That's a surprise to me. I'd suggest calling the state or possible the best western in Garberville. The BW makes their money on that drive, they should know the answer

There are a number of variables as to what constitutes acceptable growing area for Redwoods. I can't find a good source online but vaguely remember that there are attempts to grow them in China and in the south of France. In... More
