Like to take pictures? This is a must. Had driven CA 101 along coast, but this is more striking. Enough turnouts for great views. Not as crowded either. Worth the hour to the coast from the main highway. Glad we did it.

Hello, I know that you are planning to skip by everything and then make it to San Diego. I don't know your experience level and I do not mean to insult you. I would like to make a few points: 1. The biggest interrupter of plans will be closed roads from land slides mostly during the rainy season. Be sure to check the road closures site each day. I forget the name of the site. Sorry !! It should be easy to find. 2. If making time is the major criteria, why not just get on the highway and drive down to Santa Monica or directly to San Diego? You can find many beaches from Santa Monica to San Diego part of the trip. Or just go to the beaches in the San Diego area. The beach at Coranado (in San Diego) is very nice. 3. In your description, you say that you are going to do some things in a day and then drive on to the next stop. If you start at 2:00 in the afternoon, be sure that you understand how many miles you have to drive. 4. You say that you are a planner. I recommend that you map out your trip by miles or segments. It is a long way from San Francisco to San Diego. The PCH is frequently a one lane road each way and traffic slow downs are very common. 5. You are missing some of the most beautiful vistas in America. Get on the TripAdvisor site for the PCH Drive and get a look at the photos that are posted. 6. Listen to the advice of "PacificNW" on the sites to check. I hope that this is a great trip for you and your family !
