Like to take pictures? This is a must. Had driven CA 101 along coast, but this is more striking. Enough turnouts for great views. Not as crowded either. Worth the hour to the coast from the main highway. Glad we did it.

We drove from San Diego up to San Francisco over the course of 10 days, and it was just incredible! It was an experience I will never forget and I recommend it to everyone.

Starting from San Francisco, driving up to Seattle, the PCH is an amazing experience. You get a little bit of everything from twisty mountain/forest roads, to twisty shoreline roads, to twisty canyon roads. Note the twisty adjective on all of those. Pro tip: if you're...More

After spending a week in San Francisco we were off to San Jose via a scenic road ride. Multiple scenic turnouts to view the breathtaking sites. It was a little cool, so we did not spend any time on any beaches, but the views were...More

It is indeed one of the best road trips in the world. It is an experience worth to witness. "Nature at its best " is something I would say about this trip. You feel surrounded by mountains on one side and the Pacific ocean on...More

We drove from Santa Barbara north. The road is closed at Ragged Point due to a mudslide. The drive is worth it anyway. We drove to San Simeon and saw the elephant seals and then turned around and took the 101 to get further north....More

We decided to drive down highway 1 from LA to Monterey. What we can tell you about the experience is that the scenery is absolutely beautiful. What you really need to know is that it's a looooong drive though. Traffic in LA is the worst...More

We've driven from Seattle to San Diego & this road is the most beautiful drive you can ever take. The scenery is out of this world & so different along each section. Beautiful beaches & rocky coastlines. Wow.

This highway is a spectacular drive close to the Pacific Coast, where you can stop and go, swim in the several beaches, stare the cliffs, or simply unwind. Check official website to avoid road closures.

Hello, I am looking for advice/direction/guidance for traveling the Pacific Coast Highway or Highway 1 in July of 18. First off, we are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 teen kids from Chicagoland. We are looking to start our trip in San Francisco where we will do typical tourist stuff including a Cubs vs Giants baseball game. Then we plan on making the drive down the coast and ending up in San Dieago for a Cubs vs Padres game. So my questions are, what is a reasonable time that we need to plan to make this drive at a somewhat leisurable pace. Our family is not real interested in museums, castles or the such. Our real interest will be to check out the beach sites and take pictures of stuff like that. I envision driving, stopping to stretch and take pictures, and getting back on the road. Planning trips is something that I enjoy doing as I am a planner in nature. However, I’m guessing that we will not be able to just decide we are done traveling for the day and roll into the nearest town a get a hotel room so I believe planning is essential here. I am basically in the beginning stages of planning, but I’m wondering if it is somewhat feasible to drive from San Francisco, getting on highway 1 at Carmel-by-the-sea, and driving to San Luis Obispo in the first day? Is this too aggressive of a plan? Day 2 would be to drive from San Luis Obispo to Santa Monica. Again, too aggressive? Spend the night in Santa Monica then spend the day bopping around Hollywood and such, then drive down to San Diego. Please anyone, feel free to give me your thoughts an opinions on this rough plan.
