I live in Nelson and this is my preferred route through to Picton as it is so picturesque. If you are in a hurry though I suggest you go via Blenheim turning off at Rapaura Road to Spring Grove as the Queen Charlotte Road is a road to enjoy and not to rush. Have your camera handy as there are... More

Visited this predator-free sanctuary island as our first pit stop as part of our Natural Encounters Freedom Walk of the Queen Charlotte Track. You are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views at the top of the island but it is a fairly steep climb on a good track. The highlight was opening one of the Little Blue Penguin boxes and finding... More

The route from Picton via Queen Charlotte sound and Havelock is very scenic and twisty but a beautiful drive and would recommend this route if you have time.

Very different from other places in NZ. Very tranquil water, full of dolphins and other marine animals. The view of the sound from the Queen Charlotte Track was breathtaking. We also did a full day sea kayaking. The water was crystal clear and we could see eagle rays in shadow water, a lot of kina and sea cucumbers on the... More

Lovely drive along the sound and into the mountains. Few cars in March - plenty of locations to pull over to take in the beauty.

An absolutely stunning location, beautiful waters full of dolphins and other marine wildlife, native beech forests to the waters edge, and a tranquil atmosphere. I was lucky enough to enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets and even in the rain the Sound was majestic. Definitely worth putting on your itinerary.

Went on a 14 day cruise from Sydney to NZ. One of the shore tours was a Catamaran Cruise through Queen Charlotte Sound. Highly Recommend! Very professional, crew fed the fish in the water so we could take photos! Heaps of seal sightings, in the water & bathing in the sun on the rocks! Informative tour on the history of... More

So often tourists assume that the queen charlotte sound should only be visited during the summer months when the water temperature is warm enough for swimming. Not so! There it's nothing better than going out in a boat on a clear winter morning after the sun rises and the sea mist is starting to burn off. It's so mystical and... More
