The Giant's House - A historic Akaroa house with original artworks,...

The Giant's House - A historic Akaroa house with original artworks, terraced gardens with sculptures and mosaics. Very Unique. A creative feast and a wonderful experience. Romantic secluded and quiet, but only a few minutes walk to the centre of Akaroa. The Giant's House was the first bank managers house in Akaroa, built 1880 of totara and kauri. It is grand in size, proportions, and features. Elegant and comfortable, it is designed and decorated in the french style. Being the home of an artist it balances and contrasts the historic and contemporary. Both the house and terraced gardens are full of surprises -expect the unexpected at The Giant's House!

The day that we went to see the Giants house it was closed until 12 lunch so we could not see it which was very disappointing as we had to continue in our travels but were told well worth a visit in the future.

A marvellous lady in the main street recommended I walk the hill to the Giants House to see the Mosaics ... absolutely wonderful, worth the entry fee and a testimony to an artist's creativity, imagination and zest for life! Stunning!

We rushed to get there before closing and were worried we wouldn't have enough time to look around, but in the end 45 minutes was plenty and $20 seemed steep. Senior citizens should be given a discount, whatever country they are from, in my opinion. The welcome wasn't particularly friendly. The garden is colourful, garish even. Clearly a lot of... More

I'll be honest I was a little skeptical about paying 20 dollars for admission, as I was not confident what I was actually going to see. I was blown away. It was only opened for two hours while I was there and I could have easily spent the full two hours wandering through the gardens if I did not have... More

The $20 admission is about steep but this is a fun and quirky place to spend an hour or so viewing the mosaic sculptures and taking photos. Street is a uphill walk, although not too far from the main drag. You may be able to catch a ride on a free bus the town has but that is supposed to... More

Unusual quirky place but worth the long walk up the steep drive to see all the mosaic figures and displays,no entry to the house but the sights make up for it

We stayed with Josie Martin at her incredible B and B. Josie's amazing colourful artwork fills the house and garden. Despite the fact that the gardens are open to the public (and well worth a visit) you are made to feel welcome and part of the family as soon as you arrive. Sitting in the garden amongst her fantastic mozaics... More

This is a place you should definitely visit if you are in Akaroa. The house is set up a very steep hill and it gets even steeper once you are in. The effort is however rewarded by a magical display of genius. Simply put, it is a display of mosaic creatures and characters that put a smile on your face.... More

She is a true artistic genus with a great eye for design. She spent the last 20 years to design all the mosaic sculptures and walkways. She also has a great eye for the design inside her house with many Unique rooms inside the house and her studio.
