We started our Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruises back in 1985 and are the original cruise operators so we know the harbour pretty well. Along the way we've been named as the supreme tourism award winner and also hold the Enviro gold award from Qualmark to recognise our dedication to the environment.Your nature cruise will be on the 'Black Cat', a large modern and stable vessel allowing great views of all the scenery and wildlife including dolphins, seals and penguins. If by some chance you do not see dolphins then we will provide a ticket to come again another day. This happens on average 2% of the time across the whole year.We look forward to meeting you and giving you the best stories from the Akaroa Harbour.

The Black Cat Cruises operation runs an outstanding nature cruise in Akaroa Harbor where we saw several kinds of dolphins, penguins (including a large rare yellow eyed penguin and a smaller rare white flippered penguin) and some fur seals. The bus ride from Christchurch to Akaroa makes a great day trip (1.5 hour drive approximately) and the nature cruise was... More

We had a fabulous two hour cruise in the Harbour in Akaroa. We saw plenty of Hector Dolphin. We saw the rare White Flippered Blue Penguin. Those two small treasures of wildlife are only found in this part of the world. We also saw the playful fur seal and some amazing birds. Our guide was very informative. There were plenty... More

We did the Swim with dolphins excursion. (My wife did the "watch the swimmer" option, which is less expensive and you do not go in the water). First, the water, even in the summer, is very cold. They put you in wet suits. Then, they cruise the harbor looking for dolphins. Once they see dolphins, they let you slide off... More

We had a great time and had the opportunity to see the Hector's Dolphins and we got in the water with the dolphins. On our tour the guides felt that the dolphins didn't "engage our group enough" and as a result, the Black Cat Cruises gave us a partial refund. I have never experienced anything like that from a tour... More

We took the 3:30 harbor cruise and it wasn't as crowded as the one before. We saw dolphin and penguins within 10 minutes of leaving. We never saw large numbers but with the cold weather they have been having, they say the dolphins are confused just like everyone else. We saw the seal colony and the running commentary from Andrew... More

Just went on a Harbour Cruise with Black Cat Cruises and it was amazing! saw lots of wildlife (Hector's dolphins, NZ fur seals, little blue penguins, terns, sea gulls, among others) in a perfect weather day! The Skipper (Andrew) was great and gave lots of information. I am a marine biologist and found all the information provided to be accurate... More

We had an amazing time out on the water - so good that we did the tour again the next day! Our captain Andrew was incredibly knowledgeable, well-spoken, and very funny. The other crew members Helen and Jonno were great as well! On Monday we did the nature cruise and saw the rare Hector's dolphins, a yellow-eyed penguin, and many... More

Well run operation. There is plenty of space to get good sightings of scenery and animals. The Hector's dolphins are beyond adorable. See them here as this is it. Even if you have seen dolphins before these little guys are worth it. They came right up to the boat. The proximity you get to the cliffs and caves provides great... More

Out on the catamaran riding the waves, it was a great 2 hour trip and we loved every minute. The crew are friendly and welcoming and the skippers commentary is highly entertaining throughout. We didn't get to see many dolphins in the harbour so we went a little way out and then found them on the way back in. Yellow... More

This was my free trip after not seeing dolphins the first time - over 12 months later! Much better weather this time and a great trip round the harbour, past the heads and out into the ocean. Skipper Andrew managed to steer the boat, give an engaging commentary and look out for wildlife simultaneously. A wild ride through a reasonable... More
