If you enjoy medieval treasures you will love this museum. Beautiful, wonderfully preserved artifacts on dis-lay. This is a gem of a museum.

A must for all art lovers

Bardejov is located in the part of Europe, where west meets the wild east. Walk up the main square, pass the beautiful town hall and go straight to the other end of the square. The building at the right corner houses the small but exquisite Icon museum. The entrance is from the right side of the building, not from the main square. This museum preserves icons from wooden churches located in the north-eastern part of Slovakia. Many of these churches don´t exist anymore, so the museum saved this valuable objects from disappearing. Especially the icons of the Last Judgement are fascinating. A deep insight into the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic religious traditions of this region.

Great Collection of Icons!

Wow. If you like icons like I do, you'll love this place. They have 2 floors chock full of icons dating back to the 16th century (maybe even 15th...). It's just really nicely laid out, and there's enough basic information in English so I knew who I was looking at, and from when. The icons are beautiful, and they have some full iconostasis among them. Great museum.

I visited an impressive collection of icons painted on wood worth seen and studied.
I saw icon with rare iconography scenes. The circumcision of the Lord is one of them.

The reviews of the Icon Museum have it right: well worth a visit. But TripAdvisor has left off the Open-air Museum that is next to the Icon Museum. This consists of about 30 buildings, including two beautiful wooden churches, brought from all over eastern Slovakia and reassembled (unfortunately using nails in the cases of the churches). The entry fee is only 3 euros plus 1 for taking photos. If nobody is at the gate, just go next door to the Icon Museum and they will open up for your group. The house/barn combinations are the most interesting but there are also shops such as the carpenter's and the felt-making shop. You have to have a car to get here, as far as I can tell.

Nice and big collection old icons of Slovakia. This collection is unique and gives a good impression of the icons in wooden churches in this region.

A must see

This is an absolute must. We had seen 10 churches by the time we visited and we were so enthralled by the icons in this museum. What a treasure to be able to see the beautiful art from the 1400s to the present.

The museum is located next to the church and is very interesting. When travelling we always visit museums telling local history and this is one of them.
