Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I visited Bardejov as part of a "Roots" trip - my mother grew up here and left after WWII with her surviving siblings. The Holocaust Memorial is a very beautiful and painful tribute to all the Jewish people of Bardejov who were killed in the Holocaust. I found the names of my grandparents and 2 aunts on the wall and it gave closure to the loss our family suffered to see them remembered on this wall. The Star of David on train tracks next to the Memorial Wall summarizes the experience so perfectly. Whether or not you are Jewish or have a family connection to the town, it is important to visit this memorial when visiting Bardejov. It is an integral part of the history of the town and represents the experiences of Jews in similar towns across Eastern Europe.

I was impressed by the messages contained in this memorial : Never Again and Every Person Has A Name. The materials used and the overall concept transmit these messages to the next generations. The whole ensemble is a tribute to the suffering experienced by millions of people during the WWII.

There are several plaques on a wall of this outdoor memorial, explaining the history of Judaism in Bardejov. What struck me the most are the numbers: 4200 Jews of the city were deported during the war, only 300 returned afterward. Currently, there are 0 Jews in Bardejov. This memorial is around the corner from what used to be a synagogue, which is now a hardware store. Awful.
This memorial lists the names of people from various towns in the area who were deported. You can see memorial stones left behind by other visitors, under the names. Over these names is the saying 'every person has a name' which is written in Hebrew, Slovak, and English. At one end of the memorial is a set of train tracks with the Star of David in between, with the words 'never again' also written in the three languages.

Czechoslovakian Jews suffered greatly during World War ll and many were among the first victims of the Holocaust. When you look at this wall and see the names of all the people who lost their lives for no other reason than their religion, it is a tragic reminder of a part of history that should never be forgotten.

Holocaust Monuments are always so cringing to come by. To be reminded of our history. But, there should be more of them, more pompose. Because lately it seems people are forgetting this part of the history and are looking forward to repeat it in some way or another.

A place worth visiting and a reminder of the history of the Holocaust in these areas. The monument is very architecturally interesting.
