Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Before going down into the caves, you will have a guided tour through a little museum, which is very quaint. Unfortunately, English speakers were not catered for, so I had to translate for my partner.

That is the least important part of the tour for me - the highlight is of course getting to go down into the cave. We loved our ride, it’s very interactive but not without risk. Be careful down there, especially with other people bumping into you. We got stuck behind a really slow old man which was a bit annoying, but we could have queued for another go.

In the summer there were a number of little shops outside, including fresh traditional lángos, so you don’t have to worry about planning ahead for food!

Parking is a bit complicated if you don’t have coins. Took me about 15 minutes to register for the parking system (app or text) and all the instructions are in Hungarian. I suggest downloading and setting up the app beforehand as it will work across Hungary for parking. There are a tonne of apps to be found online, which can be confusing.

Make sure you buy tickets in advance online as they sell out!

Great fun, little boat ride through the caves 👍
Interesting and educational if that’s what you wanted but in truth we were only interested in the fun boat ride.

The cashier and a supervisor denied us entry because one of us was a US citizen and even though both of us had our fully vaccinated Pfizer card and they assured us prior to visiting that we would be welcomed. Even had official documents showing we were there on official business. After an hour drive to get there, left feeling completely discriminated against.

This is an attraction that one must see! The detailed information during the guided tour in the visitor center is already worth it but the real fun is the boating. Highly recommended!
This attraction is very popular and has limited capacity, be prepared for booking in advance.

Foreign visitors should be aware that the guided tour is only in Hungarian. (Rumor has it that there’s audio guide in English, but I’m not sure since I’m Hungarian and didn’t need translation).

The tour guide was knowledgeable, funny and attentive. The information was neither too much nor too little.

The boat ride was fun, the water crystal clear, the path quite adventurous. Not recommended for claustrophobic people. :-)

It was a one hour visit to a smal cave with a short boat ride at the bottom. We waited a little for our boat and we paddled on our own around a short circle and bumped against the walls and other boats. A very funny experiece. Worth a visit specially for young families.

We visited here with our 5 year old. There is audio tour headsets available for non Hungarian speakers and all the information throughout the walk through museum is in English and German as well as Hungarian. Really interesting and the little boat ride through the caves amazing!!

Decided to stop at the Tapolca caves, wished we did not. Paid for our cave tickets which included their "museum". OY! I am being generous calling it a "museum", it feels like they needed to add something to the tour to extend your time and this was it. Dusty mannequins portraying primitive people with a few other items found in the cave. This thing made the Pirates of the Caribbean ride look like a visit to the Guggenheim! Then there was the cave tour itself. We were told to get into very small tin boats and go through the cave. We were NOT expecting that. And, there we were two of us trying to row a boat through a cave. No tour, no guide, it felt like an uneventful ride. If you have other options to visit then please give this one a skip. Was totally disappointed.

I recently had the chance to visit this place and take a guided tour. Bence is an excellent employee with a good sense of humour. It was fascinating to see how the world was millions of years ago and how small and insignificant a human life is compared to millions of years of history.

The boat trip is definitely a plus, good fun and really not dangerous so don’t be afraid to try.
