We visit it almost every time while in Kuressaare. Beautiful and calm place. Inside there is a museum or even two: one part of exhibition is devoted to nature, another to history of the state. Some stairs are a bit challenging for small kids.

Really enjoyed this maze-like castle and steep stairways. You get to travel through different eras and as growing up in soviet time i got to see many things from my childhood - toys, food stamps and so on. The most i liked exhibition about "forest brothers"

My 1st visit there (or may-be not in a case I was there ca 40 years ago and just do not remember). Renovators have made a good work and the whole area is really nice. Also they have several permanent very interesting exhibitions about several historical periods there. Also a roof-terrace is open for a walk. Every summer famous "Saaremaa Opera Days" are organized by Estonian National Opera there (unfortunately I have not visited yet) and I can say that it is a perfect place for that opera festival!
P.S. Beach is ca 50m from there so take your swimming suit and towel with.

Very beautiful castle, the historical symbol of the city. Large inside exposition and big area outside to have a peaceful walk with gorgeous views. For additional fee you can try bow and arrow shooting. It’s a great place to spend time with family and get in touch with history.

An absolutely fantastic castle which seemed to be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Many rooms to explore and lots of interesting artifacts to see. The castle had many levels and although there are easy modern steps to climb, you can also take the older medieval steps if you wish. If you do choose the older version, beware that the steps can be a bit difficult as they are steep and worn through time. We did not see the possibility for a guided tour in English, so either read up on the castle before you visit or they do sell a brochure in the castle shop, which will give you a brief idea of the history. Otherwise here and there you can find some explanations in English. There is a nice museum inside which shows objects found in the castle area dating back to the 1300's. One of the first highlights you will see is the reconstruction of a skeleton found walled up in a room just to the left hand side as you enter the main courtyard of the castle. There is an exhibition of the Russian Times up to independence and also a Natural history section. Also there are small workshops in the bastions that surround the castle, where you can buy all kinds of handicrafts. A very nice visit, we spent a good two hours inside but could have spent longer. I just wish we had found a guided tour in English.

Castles are cool and fun. The museum was closed the day we were there, so we couldn't go inside, but the grounds surrounding the castle are interesting enough.
