About
A double-terraced waterfall is located on the Narva River, just above the city. Kreenholm Island is located between the two terraces. The famous Kreenholm Textile Factory was built on the shore of the waterfull in the 19th century, and was the largest factory in the Russian Empire at that time. In 1913 over ten thousand people worked there! A compact complex of industrial architecture developed around the factory that included the factory, a hospital, workers' barracks, directors' houses, and Kreenholm Park. The buildings were built in the English style using red brick. The Kreenholm brand is known far beyond Estonia.

Highly interesting area, so different from the city of Narva and with a long and great history. It is one-of-a-kind 19th century architecture with English influences to be found in Estonia. In addition to the surreal industrial area of the factories and the river there is the valuable opportunity to glance to the 'other side', the Russian territory, town of Ivangorod, which is not accessible without a visa.
We participated in an English-language tour by Narva Museum and can highly recommend it. In fact, it's not possible to get in the territory without a guide.
On request, also private tours are organized.

We visited on a Sunday noon during the official guided tour. It takes 1,5 hours to go through the area. Its very impressive and unbelievable how it has all worked - at some point 10000+ workers. During the tour you get a good understanding and go through most of the area - waterfalls, buldings etc. We very much suggest!

Closed for everyday visit, but sometimes excursions to the area are arranged. It's amazing to see the how big one textile factory once was. Hopefully one day it all be renovated and involves interesting museums, shops, cafes, residental buildings etc

The guided tour was very interesting and the whole Kreenholm industry complex was huge. It took more than 1 hour to walk it through. Exceptional!

Did the “official” walking tour of the area one Sunday morning - surprisingly many people had showed, to the point where the guides had to divide us into 3 groups. I can’t speak for the English / Russian language tour, as I did the Estonian one, but our guide was informative and personable. There’s a fair amount of walking to be done, as the factory area is truly humongous. Not a bad 1,5 hours to spend Sunday morning for 10 Euros - if you into history, abandoned buildings and taking cool pictures - I’d say check it out.
