Shop like a local
Sep 2021
We came across a supermarket in Central Market and we were stunned at the value for food, sweets and alcohol. That in itself was worth the short trek from our hotel.

I have to say though it was great going hanger by hanger (which in itself can show how a country can be productive with buildings left over from world events) because each one catered for either fish, food, crafts and fruit and veg so you were hit by various smells and scents as you walked around.

It would definitely be a great rainy day activity too.

overpriced, dirty and dangrous place for risky shopper
Apr 2021
Prices are the highest in such type of customers markets (bazars) Europe, except milk (~1EUR per 1.5 leter) and bread (1.5EUR per qulity bread.) Very dirty place. Most of non Latvian goods of China, counterfated, of zero quality. market's security demands wearing masks at every step. Too many theaves among security have been seen by my eyes in day time. The proprietors are unknown, they had been makeing reparing and renovation of shopping places for years, but they finished nothing. The Latvian police controls the market ilegally, they do not open any theft for 20 years. People look like zombies from movies in this place. Terrible, dirty and dangrous place!

sights, smells and sounds
Jan 2020
This is what traveling is all about, going to the big local markets. Take in the smells, the sights, and the sounds of this circus of a market. While not as bustling and rambunctious as some others , it is worth the trek to see. The buildings are cool anyway, gems of the past.

Should come to see if you come to Riga.

This is not a very big market but it is traditional market that you should come to see. The down side is many homeless people here.

Central market

Rather big market just at the main train and bus stations in the center of Riga. I saw many homeless people wondering around this place. If you want to buy local food production. Cured meat is very popular in Latvia. This is rather good place

Zeppelin Hanger to Centeral Market - something for everyone!
Sep 2019
Originally built as Zeppelin Hangers that have now been converted to several market halls. Each has a dominate food stuff - fish, meat, vegetable, non-perishable goods. A great place to pick up picnic supplies or stock your kitchen. The buildings are amazing even if you are not shopping. The fresh flower stalls behind the building and other non-food stalls are also good to visit. A good selection of souvenirs and food all in one place. There are also small cafes of all different food types if you want a quick and affordable meal or snack. Some of the cafes also do take away.

Bit empty but very cool buildings

Bit empty - covid times. Very cool history about the zeppelins and the move from another city 150 miles away. Amazing fresh produce and pickles from all over Latvia

So many different shops for so many different things. Food is fresh and very tasteful. Try some smoked meat and fish. The bread is very tasty and the vegetables soo fresh.

A fantastic place with great halls - halls from Zeppliner ballon trafic. Might be the biggest market in northern Europe. We loved it and bought kilos of cheese and smoked meat
