According to the preserved legend, the "Three Brothers" were built by men of the same kind. According to another version, the Riga houses received such a name by analogy with the "three sisters" on Tallinn's Pikk Street. In the Middle Ages, the street where the "three brothers" are located was located on the outskirts of Riga, and mostly artisans lived on it. This street was built up so closely that each house was, in fact, a continuation of the other.

Many a tourists were taking pictures of these buildings, as it’s obviously a popular site to see when in Riga.
I understand they’re the three oldest terraced buildings in Latvia but I personally don’t see the fascination.
Overall, a nice spot to take a picture so you can say that you’ve been, but if you don’t find time to visit you won’t leave the country feeling disappointed.

Another of the Architectural oddities that can be seen walking the Old Town, use a GPS or Google maps to help you find them. If you look closely you can see they have been built in three different periods and you can find the details in guidebooks or online. Really stop and look at their differences as these are real buildings not just reconstructions!

The first (right) of these houses is reportedly the oldest in Riga, and was for centuries a bakery. Some of the plaster on the front has been removed so that you can see the original brickwork finish. The others are not as old but still a good photo opportunity.

The Three Brothers are the oldest medieval dwelling houses in Riga. It us believed that they had been built by three men of one family. In medieval times, Maza Pils Street was located in the outskirts of Riga and craftsmen lived there.
Today, the buildings house the Latvian Museum of Architecture and the State Heritage Protection.

The Three Brothers (Tris Brali, in Latvian) is a complex consisting of three edifices, located in Riga at Maza Pils Street numbers 17, 19, and 21. Each represents various periods of development for each individual former house. European tradition dictates that buildings are constructed touching each other, a distinct fire hazard that has destroyed wide swaths of cityscapes throughout history. The oldest is at 17 Maza Pils, dating to the late 1400s. This building is characterized by Gothic ‘crow-stepped’ gables, and some early Renaissance features. It was restored in 1955 by architect Pavel Saulitis.
Adjacent to that, at 19 Maza Pils in the center of Three Brothers, has the date prominently featured: 1646, as depicted in the accompanying photo. The stone portal was added in 1746, and the house features Dutch Mannerism architectural influences. The youngest ‘brother’ is at #21, a narrow Baroque building constructed at an unknown date but acquired its present appearance in the late 1600s.
The complex known as The Three Brothers now houses the State Inspection for Heritage Protection, and the Latvian Museum of Architecture. This architectural mélange can be compared to San Francisco’s Painted Ladies, Victorian houses across from Alamo Square that bear distinctive bright paint—and cost about $3 million, each.

If you like your architecture then it's worth heading down the little back streets to see these very old buildings.
Fortunately for me it was raining when I was in Riga so photos and having a closer look wasn't an issue!

We just walked by to snap a few photos, I have no idea if you can go inside or not. Old town is so small you can see all the sites in one day really. So it's worth walking by because the difference in architecture between the 3 brothers is pretty interesting.

Three brothers are 3 houses, which are built in 3 different centuries. You can see how Riga architecture was developing through the centuries! Generally Riga offers a unique architectural scenery, while city had German / Hansaetic time, couple decades of Swedish King time, Imperial Russia time and some German time in 18 - 19th Centuries, than Independence between wards, Soviet time after IIWWT and again Independence after 1991... So there are different era in one city...

I didn’t get to go inside (didn’t think you could?) so I just stopped outside for a pic. If you’re lucky you may see a guy playing some sort of horn (sorry not sure how to define that since I’m not a musician!). It’s just a stop for a photo if you manage to get through the crowd.
