About
Construction of the Tartu Uspenski Cathedral started by the order of Peter I after the Northern War and it was consecrated in 1783. The church was established on the foundation of the Dominican Convent Church. It was initially built in the shape of a cross and was given its quadrangular shape in 1840. Interesting facts:- a chapel to St Isidor, who died as a martyr, was established in the church in the course of its extension;‑ the Bolsheviks killed 19 innocent people in the cellar of Krediidikassa 80 years ago. Their victims, archpriests Bleive and Berzhanitski, are buried in Uspenski Church.

The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God is worth visiting, although it's not in very good condition. The site itself is rich with ecclesial history of Estonia from middle ages. The present church and its reliques wittness of many christian martyrs in Estonia. I hope Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church will some day get enough money for the restoration of this 18th century shrine.

I would get the impression that it's abandoned and not open for visitors. Both the garden and the walls look like needing some serious maintenance before it can be exposed to visitors. Just not sure whether I was there at a wrong moment?

Unlike other Lutheran and Orthodox churches in Tartu this one is in a urgent need of restoration. Church itself is really beautifull building from 18th century and could be great tourist attraction. Church yard is full of greenery and really relaxing place. Unfortunatelly, church is open only for religious services.

Uspenski Cathedral, though is situated in the city centre, is, somehow, away from main tourist tracks. This is a beautiful building, not entirely of traditional orthodox architecture. It obviously is in need of renovation. Shame, it was closed when I was passing by, so I can’t say anything about the interiors.

t has red bricks and copper cladding on the towers and does not look too impressive other than its size and position from the outside but inside it is quite elaborate with grey marble and a very elaborate alter.Definitely worth a visit.
