In the middle of nowhere, on your way from Tartu to Valmiera, you will pass the sign mentioning Barclay de Tally mausoleum and when doing so, we will not only enjoy the lovely country side, but also enjoy this lovely and interesting monument.
Observe the opening hours of this unique and well kept mausoleum in the honour
of a Russian-Prussian general.

How does one rate a statue in the middle of a public park ? In Tartu there seems to be a statue or monument on every othe corner. If the purpose of such a monument is to actually raise curiosity about the depicted person, it served its purpose. While the monument does not say who Barclay was, I was sufficiently intrigued to look him up, quite a story there...

Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly, a military commander of Russian leader of Scottish origins, was born in Lithuania, grew up in Russia, spent his last years in Estonia, died in eastern Prussia and was buried in Estonia. He gained his fame during the Napoleon invasion. The monument is typical example of 19th century monuments to military men. Easy to visit, as it is situated in a centrally situated park.

Best viewed as an hors d'oeuvre prior to travelling down to the Barclay de Tolly Mausoleum near Helme, in Valgamaa (Valga County).
