It's a replica (a large one) of a letter seal, not impressive other than being in front of Estonia's national courthouse. Skytte (pronounced Shu-te) was the Swedish founder of the University of Tartu, Sweden's second-oldest university after Uppsala.

I learnt about Johan Skytte during an improvised walking tour offered by the students of a local school. It seems Mr. Skytte played an important role in the foundation of the Tartu University, almost 400 years ago. He was also its first rector.
The monument is very original and has around many benches with tags mentioning other academical personalities. As the monument is located on a park full of interesting things to see (Toome Hill) it really worth a visit.

Skytte was a Swedish politician and his connection to Tartu is described on a plaque next to this unusual memorial. It probably isn't worthy of a visit by itself but, in the park, there are a number of statues, the Observatory, the Cathedral and some great views over the town so a short stop at this interesting memorial is worthwhile, perhaps before you visit the very pleasant café nearby!

I did not know who Johan Skytte is. When I discovered this monument it was the very first time that I heard that name. Later I found that Mr. Skytte was first (swedish) rector of the University of Tartu.
Monument is modern and interesting. Maybe a little bit out of place on the Hill but sculpture in the form of seal is very original and well done.

... still no idea who Johan Skytte was. It is a shiny modern artwork, a bit out of place among the old university buildings and the ruined cathedral, but other than suggesting he was important enough to receive a monument nothing more is revealed.

If you are walking by it may be worth to stop and take a look, but for sure no need to make a detour.
